Kuching, the capital city of Sarawak, Malaysia, is set to host the prestigious 15th World Congress and Exhibition on Design and Health (WCDH) from September 29 to October 2, 2026.
This event, a first for Borneo, promises to attract global leaders, researchers, and innovators to explore the theme “Shaping Future Health Society: Designing for Healthy Lifestyle Behaviour, Equity, and Sustainability.”
Organized by Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (UNIMAS) in collaboration with the International Academy for Design and Health, the congress aims to foster interdisciplinary dialogue on creating health-promoting environments. Expected to draw up to 1,000 delegates, the event will showcase groundbreaking ideas in architecture, urban planning, healthcare, and technology, all designed to improve global wellness.
Sarawak’s Role in Advancing Healthy Cities
Kuching’s participation as a WHO Healthy City since 1994 underscores its commitment to sustainability and livability. Recognized in 2024 as the 11th cleanest city globally, Kuching continues to lead initiatives such as the Age-Friendly City project, which enhances infrastructure and services for older residents. These efforts, combined with advancements like hydrogen-powered public transport under Sarawak’s Post-COVID Development Strategy 2030, make the city an ideal host for WCDH.
Conference Highlights and Goals
The WCDH will include discussions on a salutogenic approach to design, focusing on holistic well-being and sustainable living. Topics such as healthy aging, green spaces, climate resilience, and smart city technologies will feature prominently. A gala dinner, a pre-congress symposium, and study tours to local healthcare facilities are also planned, adding practical insights to the event.
A Global Exchange of Ideas
The congress will bring together policymakers, healthcare professionals, architects, and urban planners from around the world. With Kuching as the backdrop, attendees will delve into innovative strategies for combating challenges like non-communicable diseases, mental health concerns, and aging populations while celebrating the city’s blend of culture, modernity, and natural beauty.
By hosting the WCDH, Kuching cements its reputation as a model city for health, sustainability, and innovation, setting the stage for meaningful change in urban environments worldwide.
