Sarawak Triumphs with RM 346.5 Million from Business Events

Sarawak’s business events sector has reached a new pinnacle of success, securing a remarkable 95 national and international events for the upcoming years, resulting in an estimated total economic impact of RM 346.5 million (68.1 million euros or 73.6m USD), surpassing its target by 139%.

From 2024 to 2028, Sarawak anticipates welcoming over 42,000 delegates, contributing an estimated direct delegate expenditure of RM 188.3 million and generating a tax revenue of RM 20.8 million. This influx of events and delegates signifies a vibrant resurgence for Sarawak’s industry post-pandemic, aligning with the region’s strategic post COVID-19 Development Strategy 2030.

Hosted Events and Economic Contributions

In terms of hosted events, Sarawak experienced a 7% increase compared to 2022, hosting a total of 107 business events. These events have brought a substantial economic impact of RM 372 million, with over 45,000 delegates contributing RM 202.2 million to the economy and resulting in a tax revenue of RM 22.3 million. This achievement marks a 62% increase from the previous year, reflecting the region’s growing prominence as a premier destination for business events.

The Honourable Dato Sri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah, Minister for Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts of Sarawak, commended BESarawak and the industry’s efforts at the Board of Directors Appreciation Dinner. He highlighted the significant increase in delegate arrivals and economic impact, pointing out Sarawak’s return to its pre-pandemic vibrancy and the successful targeting of business events that positively impact the region.

The event also celebrated dedicated BESarawak employees who have reached milestones of 5 and 10 years of service, acknowledging their contributions to the bureau’s success. Additionally, outgoing board members were recognized for their significant influence and contributions to the business events industry.

Dato Sri Abang Haji Abdul Karim Bin Tun Datuk Abang Haji Openg, BESarawak’s Chairman, emphasized the crucial role of board members, the Sarawak Business Events Fund committee, and other stakeholders in driving the industry to new heights. He stressed the importance of collaboration within the business events community as a key factor in the industry’s success.
