Some Swifties in Europe share more than just their love for Taylor Swift—they also share COVID-19.
The Eras Tour, the 130,000 people who attended the two concerts in the Spanish capital still remember an unforgettable night. What many don’t know is that they left the Santiago Bernabéu Stadium with more than just memories and overpriced merchandise—they also took home a free souvenir: a dose of COVID-19.
Over the past few days, thousands of fans have reported on social media that they fell ill after attending the concerts on May 29 and 30. This situation isn’t surprising, given the massive crowd, all singing loudly along to their favorite singer’s performance.
Although the pandemic has passed, COVID-19 persists. In recent weeks, the incidence of this disease in Spain has been on the rise, during a spring season when its symptoms are often mistaken for colds or allergies. There are various cases, but thousands of fans have been affected. Some even took antigen tests to confirm they had COVID-19.
A Spanish fan account dedicated to Taylor Swift conducted a poll asking followers if they had fallen ill after attending one of the singer’s Madrid concerts. Up to 35% of respondents—equivalent to about 3,780 people—answered positively.
The same story unfolded three weeks earlier in Paris. The reality experienced these days isn’t surprising. Large gatherings at any concert are inevitable, compounded by national and international travel by many fans. The fact that Taylor Swift skipped Catalonia on her tour meant many Catalans had to travel to the Spanish capital to see her.
Thousands of people from all over the world also had to land in Europe to see her live. Therefore, the increase in COVID-19 incidence hasn’t been limited to Madrid.
On June 9 and 10, Paris hosted two Taylor Swift concerts—three weeks before the ones in Madrid—and there, too, a similar situation occurred, with thousands of French fans ending up feeling unwell with symptoms compatible with COVID-19.
When you consider many Swifties pay thousands of euros to buy a Taylor Swift concert ticket, how much Covid-19 threat may frighten them?

As Taylor Swift’s The Eras Tour continues across Europe and North America, there are growing concerns about potential COVID-19 outbreaks at future concert venues. With upcoming performances scheduled in cities like Liverpool, Cardiff, London, Dublin, Amsterdam, Zürich, Milan, Gelsenkirchen, Hamburg, Munich, Warsaw, Vienna, Toronto, and Vancouver, health officials and fans alike are urged to remain vigilant.
Large gatherings at these concerts, similar to those in Madrid and Paris, could lead to an increase in COVID-19 cases, especially with the presence of new variants.
