Spain’s Historic Streets and Beaches Star in Netflix’s Berlin Spin-Off

The Netflix spin-off Berlín y la dama del armiño has turned some of Spain’s best-known destinations into the backdrop for a new international heist story, blending luxury, revenge and art theft across historic cities and coastal landscapes.

The second season of Netflix’s Berlin series, starring Pedro Alonso, premiered on 15 May 2026 and continues the expansion of the La Casa de Papel universe. Created by Álex Pina and Esther Martínez Lobato, the series follows Berlin and his crew as they attempt a complex operation linked to Leonardo da Vinci’s famous painting Lady with an Ermine.

The new storyline moves the action from Paris to Spain, with filming taking place in Seville, Madrid, San Sebastián and Peñíscola, alongside other locations across the country. Netflix confirmed that production for the new season was filmed over several weeks in various Spanish cities, with Seville becoming the main setting for the story.

In the plot, Berlin reunites his gang in Seville to stage the fake theft of the famous Renaissance artwork, which in reality is housed in Kraków’s Czartoryski Museum in Poland. The operation soon develops into a larger revenge scheme involving the Duke and Duchess of Málaga, who attempt to manipulate Berlin and instead become targets of his elaborate plan.

Seville plays the biggest role in the new season. The Andalusian city’s historic centre appears repeatedly throughout the series, with filming taking place around Calle Laraña, Plaza del Patio de Banderas and several streets near the old Jewish quarter. The production uses the city’s narrow alleys, courtyards and grand facades to create the elegant atmosphere associated with Berlin’s character.

One of the standout locations is the Palacio del Marqués de la Motilla, a neo-Gothic mansion designed by Italian architect Gino Coppedè. Its ornate interiors, tower and aristocratic design add a luxurious tone to several scenes in the series.

The Real Academia de Bellas Artes de Santa Isabel de Hungría, one of Seville’s historic cultural institutions, also appears in the production. The building’s classic architecture supports the show’s focus on art, wealth and old European power.

Madrid remains another important production base for the series. While many scenes were reportedly filmed in studios and controlled indoor sets around the Spanish capital, the city continues to provide the upscale atmosphere associated with the Berlin franchise. Madrid has long served as a key filming hub for Spanish productions because of its infrastructure, experienced crews and mix of historic and modern districts.

Further north, the series shifts to the Basque coast with scenes filmed in San Sebastián. The city’s famous Playa de la Concha and Playa de Ondarreta beaches appear in several sequences, alongside the Parte Vieja old town and Plaza de la Constitución. The seaside setting contrasts with the darker and more enclosed atmosphere of Seville, giving the series a more glamorous Mediterranean feel.

The production also filmed in Peñíscola, the fortified coastal town in Spain’s Valencia region that has become increasingly popular with international productions. The town’s medieval streets, stone walls and Templar Castle overlooking the Mediterranean create one of the season’s most visually striking locations.

Peñíscola has previously appeared in major productions including Game of Thrones, helping strengthen its reputation as one of Spain’s most cinematic seaside destinations. Tourism officials in the region have increasingly promoted the town as a filming location because of its preserved medieval character and dramatic coastal scenery.

The second season expands the scale of the Berlin universe following the success of the first series, which became one of Netflix’s most watched non-English productions globally after its release in late 2023. Netflix said the original season reached the Top 10 in 91 countries during its launch period.

The cast again includes Michelle Jenner, Tristán Ulloa, Begoña Vargas, Julio Peña Fernández and Joel Sánchez, while new characters are played by Inma Cuesta, José Luis García-Pérez and Marta Nieto.

Tourism experts say international streaming productions increasingly influence travel demand, especially in destinations featured prominently in globally distributed series. Spain has benefited strongly from screen tourism in recent years, with productions such as La Casa de Papel, Elite and Game of Thrones helping attract visitors to filming locations across the country.

By combining luxury mansions, historic streets and Mediterranean coastlines, Berlín y la dama del armiño effectively turns Spain itself into one of the main characters of the story, while offering viewers a cinematic journey through some of the country’s best-known destinations.
