Aena, the company managing Spain’s airport infrastructure, has revealed significant expansion plans for Valencia and Alicante-Elx Miguel Hernández airports. This is a major step forward for the region’s aviation sector.
These projects aim to meet growing passenger demand and modernize facilities. Work is expected to begin in 2027, during the next Airport Regulation Document (DORA III).
The expansion at Alicante-Elx airport has already received the green light, with the tender process announced earlier this week. This €19.8 million project will focus on extending the terminal building and the aircraft parking area. Among the key upgrades are expanding the old Terminal 1 boarding dock to handle increased traffic from non-Schengen destinations, adding new commercial spaces, and updating parking lots and electrical systems.
While Alicante-Elx leads, the Valencia airport expansion is not far behind. According to Aena, the design phase of the Valencia project is well underway, and specific details are expected to be announced in the near future. The project will focus on improving the terminal building to enhance passenger comfort and address capacity challenges. Upgrades are anticipated in areas such as bathrooms, commercial spaces, seating, and charging stations, supported by a €400 million budget.
Record Passenger Growth
The urgency of these expansions is underscored by record passenger numbers at Valencia airport. In 2024, the airport exceeded its maximum capacity of 10.5 million annual passengers, setting new records for traffic. The upcoming improvements aim to address these capacity constraints and ensure the airport remains fully operational and prepared for future growth.
The regional minister for Innovation, Industry, Trade, and Tourism, Marián Cano, emphasized the necessity of these investments. She described the expansion announcement as “insufficient,” stressing the urgent need for further developments, including a second runway and a rail connection to Alicante airport. Cano highlighted that these enhancements are vital for the region’s economic growth and to maintain its operational capabilities.
Preparing for the Future
Both projects highlight Aena’s commitment to future-proofing its infrastructure to accommodate growing demand. For Valencia, the expansions aim to enhance the passenger experience, while Alicante-Elx will focus on improving its ability to manage international traffic effectively.
The improvements are expected to bolster the region’s connectivity, attract more travelers, and position Valencia and Alicante as key hubs in Spain’s aviation network. By addressing current limitations and planning for the future, these projects will play a vital role in supporting the region’s economic and tourism development.
