As the passenger volume at Istanbul Sabiha Gökçen Airport (SAW) continues to increase, a new mosque will be built for worshippers that use the airport.
Expected to open by the end of 2019, the Sabiha Gökçen Airport Mosque will have a capacity to accommodate 2,800 worshippers. The groundbreaking ceremony brought together Justice and Development Party’s (AK Party) Istanbul mayoral candidate Binali Yıldırım, Deputy Governor of Istanbul Necip Çakmak, Chairman of Malaysia Airports Holdings Berhad; Tan Sri Zainun, Chairman of the Boards of Istanbul Sabiha Gokcen International Airport Investment Development and Operation Inc. Dato’ Mohd Izani bin Ghani and ISG CEO Ersel Göral.
The architecture of a mosque is shaped most strongly by the regional traditions of culture and will have examples of Seljuk architecture. The mosque will have 4 male and female masjids serving their guests 24 hours a day.
Yıldırım stated, in his speech during the ceremony, that “decorating our airports with mosques is actually a requirement of our civilization and our faith. It is, at the same time, a required service for those who come here to meet their praying needs”.
