Istanbul Sabiha Gökçen Airport salutes the inaugural flight with a water cannon for the first Air Cairo flight to Istanbul

Air Cairo Launches Flights to Istanbul Sabiha Gökçen Airport

Istanbul Sabiha Gökçen International Airport, one of Europe’s busiest airports, continues to expand its global network by connecting world tourism centers to Istanbul with new routes.

In line with its new partnership, Egypt-based airline Air Cairo made its inaugural flight to Istanbul Sabiha Gökçen (ISG) on June 6, 2024. The first Air Cairo aircraft was greeted with a water salute, and passengers were welcomed with flowers and chocolates at the terminal.

Air Cairo will operate flights between Cairo (CAI) and Istanbul Sabiha Gökçen (SAW) twice a week on Thursdays and Sundays using the 109-seat Embraer E-190 LR. The airline plans to increase the frequency to five times a week in the near future. Air Cairo joins Pegasus and Ajet on the Cairo-Sphinx (SPX) route, and Nile Air and Air Arabia Egypt on the Cairo (CAI) route, becoming the fifth airline to operate between Istanbul Sabiha Gökçen and Cairo. The new international service is expected to contribute an additional 13,000 passengers to the airport for the rest of the year.

The Air Cairo CAI route will strengthen the connections between Cairo, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1979, and Istanbul, renowned for its rich history and culture. This new route will make it easier and more comfortable for tourists to access Cairo’s popular attractions, such as the Cairo Museum, the Pyramids, and the Nile River, from Sabiha Gökçen.

“Egypt’s Visa-on-Arrival Policy Boosts Passenger Numbers by 57%”

Commenting on the partnership, Acting CEO of ISG Kerem Maybek said, “Last year’s strategic cooperation agreement between Turkey and Egypt, which introduced visa-on-arrival for Turkish citizens, has strengthened relations between the two countries. The visa-on-arrival policy led to a significant increase in flights from our airport to Egypt, with monthly passenger numbers rising from 35,000 in April 2023 to 55,000 in April 2024, a 57% increase. We aim to further increase these numbers with our 8th route to Egypt, operated by Air Cairo. As Istanbul Sabiha Gökçen Airport, we are proud to strengthen strategic connections between the two countries.”

Known as the “City Airport” for its variety of transportation options and proximity to city centers, Sabiha Gökçen Airport offers comfortable access to 164 destinations in 52 countries, including 40 domestic and 124 international routes.
