Florida Tops U.S. Shark Attack List in 2023

The Florida Museum has released the International Shark Attack File, confirming that Florida had the most unprovoked shark attacks in the U.S. in 2023. The state recorded 16 unprovoked shark attacks, making up 44% of the U.S. total and 23% of unprovoked bites worldwide.

Volusia County was highlighted as a specific hot spot, accounting for 50% of Florida’s shark attacks. The county’s waters are known for their high number of shark encounters, particularly affecting surfers and those engaged in board sports. In 2023, Volusia County in Florida was named the shark capital of the world.

Despite leading the nation, the 16 incidents in Florida were lower than the state’s most recent five-year annual average of 19 attacks. Pinellas County also reported two shark bites, contributing to the overall statistics.

Hawaii ranked as the second-highest state for shark attacks, with eight recorded cases. On a global scale, Australia followed closely behind the U.S., with 15 unprovoked shark attacks in 2023.

The report emphasized that surfers and participants in board sports made up 42% of the shark attack incidents. This data underscores the importance of being cautious in known shark habitats, especially for those engaged in high-risk water activities.
