Spain’s leading railway company, Renfe, has reached a historic milestone, transporting more than 537 million passengers in 2024, surpassing its previous all-time record from 2006.
This represents a 2.7% increase compared to 2023, adding nearly 14 million new travelers across its commercial and public rail services.
The growth was particularly strong in high-speed train services, with 35.2 million passengers choosing AVE, Avlo, Alvia, Euromed, and Intercity—a 14.4% increase over the previous year. The introduction of S-106 trains in May contributed to this surge by expanding capacity on high-speed routes connecting Madrid, Aragon, Catalonia, Valencia, and Murcia.
Renfe’s high-speed division saw 22.3% growth, reaching 25.9 million passengers, a sharp rise from 21.2 million in 2023.
Public service routes also played a major role in Renfe’s record-breaking year. More than 501.9 million passengers used Renfe’s Cercanías, Media Distancia, and Avant services, marking an increase of 10 million riders (+1.9%).
Cercanías trains, particularly in Madrid, saw significant demand. The capital’s commuter network carried 241.7 million passengers, an increase of 11.7 million (+5.1%) over the previous year. Meanwhile, Avant high-speed medium-distance services experienced an 8.1% rise, welcoming 13.6 million passengers in 2024.
A Leader in Spain’s Liberalized Rail Market
Renfe’s dominance in the Spanish rail sector continues, with its extensive network of destinations, frequent departures, and passenger-friendly government initiatives such as Verano Joven and Free Passes for Cercanías, Rodalies, and Media Distancia travelers.
In addition to offering more connections than any other operator, Renfe has also strengthened its commitment to sustainability. The company’s electric trains are now certified “Carbon Neutral” by AENOR, ensuring that they operate without direct emissions and rely entirely on 100% renewable energy.
With passenger numbers at an all-time high, Renfe is proving that sustainable, efficient, and high-speed rail travel is a top choice for millions across Spain.
