Formula E in Portland: Nick Cassidy’s quest for the championship

On June 24, Formula E is coming to the United States for the Portland Grand ePrix. It will be the inaugural grand prix in Portland, being held at the Portland International Raceway.

The race will replace the New York City ePrix that has previously taken place on the Brooklyn Street Circuit. While it will be the first Formula E race at the Portland International Raceway, the track currently holds races for the IndyCar Series, NASCAR Xfinity Series, and ARCA Menards Series West among others.

The Formula E season is slowly drawing to a close. This will mark the 12 race of a 16-race season for the circuit which begins it’s season in mid-January and runs through the end of July.

Heading into the Portland Grand Prix, Pascal Wehrlein is leading the way in the standings but by a narrow margin. With 134 points, Wehrlein has just a one-point lead over Jake Dennis who sits at No.2 with 133 points, and Nick Cassidy who is in the No.3 spot with 128 points. Rounding out the top five is Mitch Evans with 109 points and Jean-Eric Vergne with 97 points. After Vergne there is a sizeable drop-off to the next grouping in the standings.

Cassidy, he’s off to the best start in his career as he looks for his first career title. In his first two seasons i Formula E in 2020-2021 and 2021-2022, the 28-year-old New Zealand native finished 15th and 11th respectively. However, after winning back-to-back races earlier this season, and finishing top five in four other races, Cassidy has already amassed 128 points this season and as mentioned above is sitting third in the Formula E standings. Last year’s champion Stoffel Vandoorne is off to a slow start with just 42 points and standing 11th in the standings. He has had some strong runs this season including winning the Mexico City EPrix to open the season. He’s also finished top five in three of the last four races, making his presence known. That being said, with just five races left in the season, his time is running out to make a run at a back-to-back title.

Cassidy’s hopes remain but he will have to hope for better form down the stretch. After winning in Berlin and Monaco, Cassidy has finished 7th and 18th in each of the last two races. His 18th-place finish in the second Jakarta race was the worst of his season and the worst of his last 12 races. He’ll need to hope to return to the form that he saw, for the most part, this season, finishing fifth or better in six consecutive races.

While Cassidy looks to make a run, Jake Dennis of the UK is making a strong run himself. Dennis has finished third or better in each race that he has ran this year but did miss four races in the middle of the season that is currently keeping him in second place. If Dennis can stay on the track, he is likely the odds on favorite thanks to his current form to win the Formula E Championship this season. That being said, you can surely bet that Cassidy will try to have something to say about that.

After racing in Portland on the 24, Formula E will take three weeks off and return in mid-July for the Rome ePrix 1 and Rome ePrix 2 on July 15 and July 16 respectively. The season will conclude on July 29 and July 30 with the London ePrix 1 and London ePrix 2. ABB FIA Formula E World Championship, better known as Formula E is a championship electric car racing.
