It’s never too late for Anglophiles who wish they’d gone to the University of Oxford. The Oxford Experience, a residential program designed for anyone who would enjoy a one-week course at Oxford, will take place during six weeks next summer, July 7 to August 17, 2019. Registration for the ever-more-popular program opens on September 24 and anyone wishing to get their choice of courses, should hop to.
The program takes place at Christ Church, one of the most prestigious and beautiful of Oxford colleges, which was founded almost five centuries ago. Students stay in comfortable accommodations with private bath and dine in the magnificent Hall made famous by the Harry Potter films Three meals daily—a full English breakfast, a buffet lunch and a delicious, served, three-course dinner (plus one dinner on High Table)—are included in the program, which costs £1,550 or approximately US$2,003 per week..
The courses cover some 60 subjects as varied as The English Civil War and Revolution; The Immortal Alexander the Great; Thomas Hardy, Novelist and Poet; The Crusades; Life and Music of Franz Schubert; Enigma and the Intelligence War; Country Houses; The Cotswolds; Creative Writing for All; The Fixing Genes; Turkey and Iran, Rivals in the Middle East; The Art of the English Garden, The Magic of Cornwall; Chaucer’s Canterbury Tales; and The Beatles.
Many courses include excursions to stately homes, museums, cathedrals and such, and on some afternoons there are tours of Christ Church and Oxford. Students enjoy relaxing in a riverside pub, playing croquet in the golden light of an English summer evening, watching traditional Morris Dancers in Tom Quad or attending Evensong In the college chapel, which is also the Oxford Cathedral.
The week ends with a champagne reception in the Cathedral Garden and a gala farewell dinner in Hall, where everyone receives a “diploma.” For more information go to www.conted.ox.ac.uk/oxford-experience or write to: Oxford Experience, OUDCE, 1 Wellington Square, Oxford, OX1 2JA, UK.
