Relaxed Cancun vacation

Traveling Mexico During the COVID-19 Pandemic

Thousands of travelers are already enjoying uncrowded, relaxed vacations in Mexico’s popular beach destinations such as Los Cabos, Puerto Vallarta, and Cancún as the COVID-19 situation evolves.

Although the United States’ Travel Advisory for Mexico is at Level 4 – Do not travel to Mexico due to COVID-19, already many Americans and US residents flocked to Mexican paradise. Not all Mexico is listed as not to travel. The US Travel Advisory page for Mexico says several tourist destinations are safer to travel and even there are no restrictions on travel for U.S. government employees in Baja California Sur, which includes tourist areas Cabo San Lucas, San Jose del Cabo, La Paz and in Quintana Roo state, which includes tourist areas Cancun, Cozumel, Isla Mujeres, Playa del Carmen, Tulum, and the Riviera Maya.

The Foreign & Commonwealth Office currently advises British nationals against all but essential international travel. Mexico is not listed in the countries and territories exempt from advice against ‘all but essential’ international travel, according to the August 20 update.

Currently, there’s a ban on overseas travel from Australia. You can’t leave Australia unless you get an exemption from the Department of Home Affairs.

Already many travelers from the U.S. are enjoying uncrowded holidays at popular Mexican beach destinations such as Los Cabos, Puerto Vallarta, Cancún and Cozumel

How to travel to Mexico?

Since March 21, travelers can’t drive to Mexico from the US, and governments of both countries extend their agreement to close the land border to nonessential travel until September 21. However, there are no restrictions on flying into Mexico. Commercial flights are operating to and from Mexico. Hotels and restaurants are open since June 2020 but bars and nightclubs have not yet reopened.

Mexico has created a color-coded system for each state. 25 states are designated “orange” under the federal system between August 17 and August 30. Baja California, Mexico City, Quintana Roo, and Yucatan are in this category. Under orange, hotels, restaurants, barbershops, open-air parks, and gyms are limited to 50 percent capacity.  Markets and supermarkets will operate at 75 percent capacity. Additionally, shopping malls, churches, cinemas, theaters, museums, and cultural events will be limited to 25 percent capacity.

The Mexican government encourages people to continue respecting social distancing measures, washing their hands, and coughing or sneezing in the inner part of the elbow to prevent the spread of COVID-19.

Hotels

From June 8, 2020, hotels have been allowed to reopen their doors with some sanitary restrictions and reduced capacity. As of today, hotels can operate with up to 50% of their rooms full, however currently less than 20% of the hotel rooms in Cancun and Riviera Maya are actually occupied.
