jewish vilnius

Jewish Vilnius Tour

The Jewish community in Vilnius began to establish itself in the late 16th century. In 1633, the official Jewish quarter was established, with one street already named Jewish street. The renowned Great Vilnius synagogue was later built there. Initially, the Jewish quarter encompassed Butcher’s and Jewish streets and the alley of Saint Nicholas, but Jews also owned property throughout Vilnius. Over time, restrictions on Jewish residence and trade were relaxed, culminating in 1861 when Vilna Jews were allowed to settle in any street without exceptions, under Russian Empire rule.

Explore the historic Jewish Quarter in Vilnius Old Town, often referred to as the “Jerusalem of Lithuania,” and delve into its rich history as you wander through its streets, experiencing both its prosperous and challenging moments. By walking with a guide, you can listen stories from WWII and gain a better understanding for the significance of this area.

Traveller Lila said, “Excellent tour with very very knowledgeable and accommodating tour guide. She pointed out many interesting and secluded places and answered all of our questions”.
