Boeing [NYSE: BA] and Vietnam Airlines have announced a significant intention to order 50 737-8 airplanes from the 737 MAX family.
This move is set to expand Vietnam Airlines’ single-aisle fleet, offering enhanced fuel efficiency and environmental benefits. The 737 MAX’s superior flexibility is poised to cater to Vietnam’s burgeoning aviation sector. The intention was unveiled during a signing event on Monday, Sept. 11, attended by President Joe Biden, Secretary of State Antony Blinken, and other White House and Vietnamese government officials.
Both U.S. and Vietnamese representatives highlighted that this intention would not only create job opportunities in both nations but also fortify their economic ties. With Boeing’s longstanding association with Vietnam’s civil aviation sector, the addition of the 737 MAX fleet will further Vietnam’s ambition of emerging as a premier aviation hub.
Dang Ngoc Hoa, Chairman of the Board of Directors of Vietnam Airlines, emphasized the significance of this aircraft investment in line with the airline’s vision for 2035. He stated, “This new narrow-body fleet will enable us to enhance our overall growth, deliver top-notch service on domestic and Asian routes, and modernize our fuel-efficient fleet.”
Brad McMullen, Boeing’s senior vice president of Commercial Sales and Marketing, acknowledged Southeast Asia’s position as one of the fastest-growing aviation markets globally. He said, “The 737 MAX is the ideal aircraft for Vietnam Airlines to efficiently cater to this regional demand.” He also reflected on the enduring partnership between Boeing and Vietnam Airlines, which began in 1995 with the airline leasing 767s.
The 737 MAX, with over 5,600 firm orders from over 100 global customers, boasts a 20% reduction in fuel consumption and carbon emissions. Its design offers passengers a more comfortable experience, featuring modern interiors, LED lighting, and spacious overhead storage bins.
Vietnam Airlines’ acquisition of the 737 MAX family will enable it to cover distances up to 3,500 nautical miles (6,480 km), catering to the rising demand for international and regional routes. The airline currently operates 15 787 Dreamliner jets, serving over 50 destinations across 17 countries. As a member of the SkyTeam Alliance, Vietnam Airlines offers its passengers the advantage of earning and redeeming miles across 1,000 global destinations.
Boeing remains dedicated to fostering robust ties with Vietnamese suppliers, aiming to establish a resilient global supply chain that delivers top-tier products and services. Presently, Boeing has established a corporate office in Hanoi and Field Service Offices in both Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City.
