Holland America Line, a renowned cruise line, celebrated two significant milestones at Flynn Cruiseport Boston: its 150th Anniversary and a 25-year partnership with the Massachusetts Port Authority (Massport). The event, held aboard the Zaandam, was a testament to the enduring relationship between the cruise line and the city of Boston.
Gus Antorcha, Holland America Line President, expressed gratitude and pride in the longstanding relationship, emphasizing Boston’s importance as a key homeport. “For over two decades, we’ve been cruising from Boston to various destinations, and today we not only celebrate our anniversaries but also honor three Boston-based organizations that have made significant contributions to the city and its residents.”
In a gesture of goodwill, Holland America Line donated $5,000 each to three local organizations: Edgerley Family South Boston Boys and Girls Club, South Boston Neighborhood House, and Labouré Center. These organizations play vital roles in youth development, community support, and providing services to vulnerable populations in the region.
Lisa Wieland, Chief Executive Officer of Massport, highlighted the economic significance of cruising in the region. “Cruising plays a pivotal role in our visitor economy, supporting thousands of jobs and acting as an economic catalyst for the Commonwealth,” she said. Wieland also expressed gratitude for Holland America Line’s donations, emphasizing the positive impact on the South Boston community.
This year, Holland America Line celebrates its 25th year of calling at Boston. The cruise line estimates a direct economic impact of over $22 million annually for the community, with each ship visit contributing more than $300,000 to the local economy. The company also collaborates with local vendors, such as John Nagle Company, which supplies fresh fish, and piano tuner Kirk Hughes.
As part of its 150th-anniversary celebrations, Holland America Line is hosting events across its fleet of 11 ships and making port donations worldwide.
Flynn Cruiseport Boston, a significant contributor to the city’s tourism economy, is welcoming over 25 cruise lines this year, with an estimated annual economic impact of $135 million and supporting 2,200 jobs.
