Majorca has launched a plan to implement public policies that increase the accessibility of tourism for people with disabilities and additional needs.
The main objective of the plan is, as explained by the president of the Consell de Majorca, “to apply social justice, because everyone has to be able to visit Majorca, whatever their needs”.
Among the actions to be implemented is the improvement of information about the destination, through the launch of a new tourism website that will detail all information about accessibility on the island. Majorca will also carry out training days in accessibility for the tourism sector throughout 2022.
Additionally, work will be done to promote the destination among its main source markets, with specific campaigns focused on the disability sector. Within this initiative, other actions include the organisation of fam trips to show advances in accessibility, promotional actions in the main markets in coordination with their disability platforms, and finally participation in fairs in the sector, such as REHACARE 2022.
Characteristics of accessible tourism
According to a previous study which informed this plan, travelers with disabilities are considered a new market segment with a very specific profile, marked especially by returning to a destination when they find it accessible. The segment also has a higher than average spending capacity (approximately 28% more); and is an excellent contributor to deseasonalisation.
