Rovaniemi opens the Christmas Season 2022 in Santa Claus Village, Arctic Circle, and celebrates the post-pandemic tourism boom.
This year, the grand opening will take place on Saturday the 19th of November at the central square of Santa Claus Village in Rovaniemi. The event gathers local people and visitors to the Arctic Circle and the event is broadcasted online.
The musical Christmas performances take the audience into the merry moods of Christmas and Winter. As part of the festivities the Mayor of Rovaniemi Ulla-Kirsikka Vainio will present the annual Unicef donation made by the city of Rovaniemi to Unicef Finland. The traditional Christmas Opening culminates in Santa’s arrival and speech – what does Santa want to tell us this year?
Post-pandemic travel is on rise and the Official Hometown of Santa Claus is expecting a busy winter season. Rovaniemi is more connected to European cities than ever before. There are record-breaking amount of flight connections bringing travellers from 11 different European cities directly to Rovaniemi. The first flights have been full and the visitors are enjoying the arctic Northern Lights season.
“Winter tourism of Rovaniemi and Lapland is recovering rapidly as demand grows and even exceeds the pre-pandemic level. We want to enable people to enjoy the magic of Christmas and fully experience the arctic adventures, once again. The Grand Opening of Christmas Season 2022 event is perfect for that.” says Sanna Kärkkäinen, Managing Director of Visit Rovaniemi.
