Virgin Australia Invests in WA with E190-E2 Aircraft Order

Virgin Australia Group has announced a significant investment in its Western Australia (WA) regional and charter operations by placing firm orders for eight Embraer E190-E2 aircraft.

It will not only enhance the airline’s fleet capabilities but also create new job opportunities and strengthen the region’s aviation sector.

A New Era for Regional Aviation in WA

The introduction of the Embraer E190-E2 marks a new chapter for Virgin Australia Regional Airlines (VARA), the WA-based regional and charter division of the airline. The E190-E2, renowned as the world’s most fuel-efficient single-aisle jet aircraft, is set to replace the aging Fokker 100 fleet. This transition is poised to improve both operational efficiency and passenger experience.

The aircraft’s advanced design includes a two-by-two seating configuration and the latest in aerodynamics and engine technology, which contributes to its low fuel consumption and reduced carbon emissions. With a flying range of approximately six hours, the E190-E2 will primarily serve charter flights, reinforcing VARA’s position as a leading operator in the WA charter market.

Busan Green and Growing

Strengthening the WA Economy

The introduction of these new aircraft will support the creation of 150 new jobs in WA over the next three years. This move has been warmly welcomed by local government officials. Deputy Premier of Western Australia and Treasurer, Minister for Transport and Minister for Tourism, the Hon. Rita Saffioti commented, “This is a major investment in our state’s regional aviation sector and will help to grow the number of jobs available within Western Australia. Our Government’s support for regional aviation gives airlines like Virgin Australia the confidence to invest back into Western Australia.”

Enhancing Passenger Experience and Sustainability

Virgin Australia Group CEO Jayne Hrdlicka expressed her enthusiasm for the new fleet addition, stating, “When the first new E190-E2 enters service from October 2025, it will become the first brand new aircraft in the WA charter market this century. The E190-E2 is the most fuel-efficient aircraft in its segment and will reduce emissions by about 30 percent compared to the outgoing F100. These aircraft also feature significantly lower noise profiles and enhanced passenger comfort.”

The E190-E2 is also compatible with sustainable aviation fuel (SAF), with certification to fly on blends of up to 50 percent SAF and successful test flights on 100 percent SAF. This makes it a key component of Virgin Australia’s broader sustainability strategy.

The acquisition of the E190-E2 aircraft is part of Virgin Australia’s extensive fleet renewal and expansion program. This program includes not only the addition of these state-of-the-art jets but also new Boeing 737 MAX-8 aircraft and the refurbishment of the airline’s existing 737 fleet. Additionally, VARA’s new $35 million hangar at Perth Airport is under construction, with an expected opening in late 2024, further cementing the airline’s commitment to regional aviation in WA.

Martyn Holmes, Embraer Commercial Aviation’s Chief Commercial Officer, highlighted the significance of this partnership: “We are excited to welcome Virgin Australia to the Embraer family and look forward to seeing our best-in-class E2 – renowned for comfort, quietness, and low emissions – take the airline to even greater heights.”

Virgin Australia’s investment in the E190-E2 aircraft not only reflects confidence in the WA market but also underscores the airline’s commitment to sustainability, passenger comfort, and regional growth.
