Changi Airport immigraiton clearance

1.5 Million Use Changi Airport’s 10-Second Passport-Less Immigration

Since the full rollout of passport-less clearance at Changi Airport on September 30, 2024, nearly 1.5 million travelers have passed through immigration without needing to present their passports.

The new system, driven by biometric technology, allows Singapore residents to clear immigration using only their facial and iris recognition.

Foreign visitors can also enjoy the convenience of passport-free clearance when departing Singapore, although they are still required to present their passports upon arrival.

The Immigration & Checkpoints Authority (ICA) reports that the average immigration clearance time has been drastically reduced, dropping from 25 seconds to just 10 seconds, marking a 60% improvement in efficiency.

The significant reduction has enhanced the overall experience for travelers, making Singapore the first country to implement this system on such a large scale.

Singapore residents, including citizens, permanent residents, and long-term pass holders, have been taking advantage of this seamless process.

Visitors departing the country can also clear immigration swiftly using only biometric data. The system, which was first tested in August 2024, has rapidly gained traction, underscoring the potential of biometrics to transform air travel.

A traveler uses Changi Airport’s automated passport-less immigration clearance system, with steps explaining facial and iris biometric scanning for entry and exit.

While passport-less immigration clearance is now fully operational, travelers are advised to continue carrying their passports as they may be required for immigration clearance at their destination countries. Additionally, ICA retains the right to request passports for verification purposes if needed.

This system is part of ICA’s broader New Clearance Concept, introduced to improve both speed and security across Singapore’s immigration checkpoints. The biometric system is also expected to be expanded to other travel hubs in the region, further advancing Singapore’s standing as a leader in travel technology innovation.

With passport-less clearance, travelers can now enjoy a faster and more streamlined immigration process, a shift that is already positively impacting the travel experience at one of the world’s busiest airports.
