San Diego International Airport (SAN) is set to welcome a new travel connection to Europe with the launch of KLM Royal Dutch Airlines’ direct flights to Amsterdam.
Starting May 8, 2025, KLM will operate three weekly flights between San Diego and Amsterdam Schiphol Airport (AMS), adding to SAN’s growing roster of international routes.
The Boeing 787-9 will serve this route, providing seating options across three classes: 30 seats in World Business Class, 21 in Premium Comfort, and 224 in Economy. Travelers departing from Amsterdam will board flight KL639, scheduled to leave Schiphol at 09:50 and arrive in San Diego at 12:00 local time. For return trips, flight KL640 departs San Diego at 13:55, touching down in Amsterdam the following morning at 09:15.
KLM’s arrival marks the 19th airline to operate at SAN, connecting travelers to Amsterdam’s renowned museums, canals, and business hubs, which align closely with San Diego’s dynamic corporate landscape.
As Kimberly Becker, CEO of the San Diego County Regional Airport Authority, noted, “European travel has seen a 30% surge this summer, signaling a strong demand from international travelers.” This new Amsterdam route, SAN’s 10th international destination, expands nonstop options for those traveling to or from Southern California.
From Amsterdam, travelers can conveniently reach numerous European cities. KLM’s membership in the SkyTeam Alliance will allow SAN passengers to benefit from coordinated schedules and shared loyalty perks across 19 other global airlines, broadening options for both business and leisure travel.
With KLM’s San Diego-Amsterdam service, Southern California gains another vital gateway to Europe, providing access to over 160 destinations and reinforcing connections across the Atlantic.
