Sweden’s public prosecutor has officially closed the investigation into an alleged hotel assault in Stockholm, citing “insufficient evidence” to proceed. The incident, which occurred in early October, drew global attention after Swedish media linked Real Madrid striker Kylian Mbappé to the case.
The Swedish Prosecutor’s Office confirmed that the investigation centered on alleged crimes of rape and two cases of sexual assault at a Stockholm hotel where Mbappé was staying with friends during an international break. However, Prosecutor Marina Chirakova stated, “The evidence is not sufficient to continue with the case and the investigation has therefore been closed. The person in question has not been notified of the suspicion of any crime.”
From the start, Swedish authorities avoided naming Mbappé in any official capacity. Still, media reports speculated about his involvement, describing him as “reasonably suspicious.” The French football star, however, maintained his innocence, dismissing the allegations as baseless rumors. Speaking to Canal+ France, he said, “I was surprised. I’m always surprised. These are things that happen and you don’t see them coming… The Swedish government hasn’t said anything. I’m not worried.”
The incident reportedly occurred on October 10, 2024, in a hotel where Mbappé and other players, including fellow footballer Nordi Mukiele, were staying. After the Swedish press circulated the story, it quickly gained traction internationally. When Radio Monte Carlo reported on the situation, Mbappé took to social media, calling it “fake news” and asserting that he had not been summoned or questioned by any Swedish authority.
His legal team also responded, strongly denying any connection between the player and the alleged incident. One of Mbappé’s lawyers appeared on French television to defend him, stating that they would file a complaint for slander against anyone linking the footballer to the case. “A complaint does not make the truth,” the lawyer emphasized.
Despite weeks of speculation, Swedish prosecutors never summoned Mbappé or charged him with any crime. His club, Real Madrid, remained silent throughout the ordeal, offering quiet support for their star player. The case’s closure brings an end to a turbulent period for Mbappé, who was also managing a legal dispute with his former club, Paris Saint-Germain, over contract termination issues.
With the investigation officially closed and no charges filed, Mbappé can now focus on his football career without the shadow of the allegations hanging over him.
