Renfe has sold more than 2.5 million tickets under its Verano Joven program between June 19 and August 21, 2025, representing a 25% increase in youth rail travel compared with the same period last year. The initiative offers discounted fares for passengers aged 18 to 30 to encourage summer travel across Spain and Europe.
Launched for the second consecutive year, Verano Joven provides significant savings on both domestic and international routes. In just over two months, sales nearly matched the 2.6 million tickets issued during the entire 2024 edition of the program, highlighting its growing popularity among young travelers.
Discounts and Offers
The Verano Joven scheme applies to trips taken between July 1 and September 30, 2025. Eligible passengers benefit from a range of discounts: 50% off high-speed trains (AVE and Avlo) and long-distance services, capped at €30 per ticket; 50% off Avant medium-distance services; and up to 90% off regional Media Distancia and Ancho Métrico services. In addition, Renfe extends the 50% discount to Interrail Global Flexible passes valid for 10 days of travel within two months, when purchased through Renfe.
The government-backed initiative is further supported by Renfe’s loyalty program, Más Renfe. Members aged 18 to 30 can earn an additional benefit: for every two journeys taken on AVE, Avlo, or long-distance trains under Verano Joven, participants receive one free trip. This promotion allows each traveler to claim up to two 100% discount codes for selected direct AVE and long-distance services, valid for travel until December 31, 2025. Codes will be issued after the program ends on September 30.
Passenger Growth
The 2025 edition has outpaced last year’s participation levels, with an average of 40,000 tickets sold per day. By August 19, 2024, Renfe had sold just over 2 million tickets under the program, underscoring the 25% increase recorded this summer. The sharp rise illustrates strong demand for affordable rail options among young people and reflects the program’s effectiveness in boosting domestic and cross-border travel.
Program Objectives
Verano Joven is designed to make rail more accessible to younger demographics while promoting sustainable mobility. By offering steep discounts, Renfe aims to encourage travel within Spain and across Europe, supporting tourism flows during the peak summer months. The program also helps strengthen rail’s position as a preferred mode of transport for the next generation of travelers.
Outlook for the Season
With ticket sales already near last year’s total, Renfe expects the final numbers for 2025 to surpass the 2.6 million mark achieved in the inaugural edition. The growth underscores the program’s success as a government-supported measure to increase youth mobility and to position rail as an affordable and environmentally friendly alternative to other modes of transport.
As the campaign continues through September, Renfe is preparing for further demand, while also highlighting its loyalty incentives to encourage repeat travel. The program’s performance has reinforced Verano Joven as one of the most impactful initiatives in Spain’s summer transport strategy, with significant benefits for both domestic connectivity and international tourism links.
