Sarawak Gains University Support for Legacy Events

Business Events Sarawak (BESarawak) has secured strong backing from Malaysian universities to host legacy-driven academic conferences following the completion of its month-long Academia Malaysia Advocacy Programme.

The initiative, which concluded on 26 August 2025, introduced Sarawak’s legacy impact framework to the higher education sector and highlighted how events can produce long-term societal, environmental, and economic benefits.

The programme aligns with Sarawak’s ambition to position itself as Malaysia’s leading destination for impact-focused business events. Universities expressed interest in organizing conferences that contribute to Sarawak’s Post COVID-19 Development Strategy 2030 (PCDS 2030) and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (UNSDGs), marking a shift toward research gatherings designed to leave enduring legacies.

Legacy-Driven Approach to Academic Events

The legacy framework presented by BESarawak emphasizes how academic gatherings can influence public policy, improve community well-being, and inspire innovation. By embedding legacy principles into event planning, conferences aim to foster collaboration between academia, government, and industry while enhancing institutional reputation and attracting strategic funding.

“Universities want more than just an academic gathering. They want platforms that generate lasting change. As Malaysia’s Legacy Capital for business events, Sarawak delivers on that promise,” said Amelia Roziman, CEO of BESarawak.

She added, “Embedding legacy principles into events makes research more relevant, fosters collaboration across sectors, attracts strategic funding, and enhances institutional reputation, ensuring benefits that last long after the event ends.”

Frameworks and Digital Tools

Sarawak’s success in advancing academic conferences is supported by the Legacy Impact Master Action Plan 2023–2025. The plan provides guidelines for organizers to measure and strengthen the long-term benefits of their events. To reinforce this, BESarawak has introduced AI.LEGACY, an AI-powered Intelligent Impact Management System designed to track and enhance the outcomes of conferences in real time.

The integration of digital tools is intended to support evidence-based decision-making and provide transparency in measuring legacies. This approach reflects a growing demand among universities and stakeholders for accountability in how conferences contribute to society beyond immediate knowledge-sharing.

Strategic Growth in Event Infrastructure

Sarawak’s ability to attract and retain high-profile academic events is supported by ongoing investments in infrastructure and connectivity. The upcoming launch of AirBorneo, a new regional airline, is expected to improve access to Sarawak for both domestic and international delegates. The expansion of the Borneo Convention Centre Kuching (BCCK) to accommodate 14,500 delegates will further strengthen the state’s capacity to host large-scale academic and professional gatherings.

These developments aim to position Sarawak as a destination where academic events not only convene experts but also catalyze change through long-term impact. For universities, the combination of upgraded facilities and Sarawak’s established legacy framework presents opportunities to host conferences that extend their influence beyond the academic community.

Universities as Strategic Partners

The strong interest expressed by Malaysia’s leading universities underscores their role as strategic partners in shaping the next phase of academic conferencing. By collaborating with BESarawak, institutions are expected to align research dissemination with policy development, innovation agendas, and sustainable practices.

The model being advanced in Sarawak reflects broader trends in the global meetings industry, where destinations are seeking to link conferences to legacy outcomes. For academic institutions, participation offers a chance to increase relevance, secure international collaborations, and build reputations as drivers of positive change.

The Academia Malaysia Advocacy Programme is part of BESarawak’s long-term strategy to differentiate Sarawak in the competitive business events sector. By embedding legacy into the foundation of its academic events strategy, Sarawak aims to transform conferences from short-term gatherings into platforms for measurable impact. The approach supports both local development objectives under PCDS 2030 and global commitments under the UNSDGs.

Sarawak’s positioning as Malaysia’s Legacy Capital for business events reflects a deliberate effort to link tourism, education, and sustainable growth. With universities now stepping forward as partners, the region is preparing to leverage its enhanced infrastructure, digital tools, and policy frameworks to host a new generation of academic gatherings that extend benefits well beyond the closing session.

Through the combination of academic interest, government support, and industry innovation, Sarawak is building momentum as a destination where research translates into action. The long-term goal is to ensure that every academic event leaves a measurable footprint in advancing policy, improving community welfare, and strengthening the role of education in sustainable development.
