Amtrak Launches NextGen Acela, America’s Fastest Train

Amtrak launches its NextGen Acela high-speed service on Aug. 28 in New York City, introducing the fastest passenger trains in the United States on the Northeast Corridor after inaugural trips from Washington, D.C., and Boston on Aug. 27.

The Alstom-built fleet reaches 160 mph and shortens prior Acela trip times by up to 20 minutes across New York, Boston, Philadelphia, and Washington, D.C.

Five new trainsets enter revenue service immediately, with 28 scheduled to be in operation by 2027 alongside the legacy Acela fleet. The rollout marks the first introduction of new U.S. high-speed trainsets in nearly 25 years and is part of Amtrak’s broader corridor modernization aimed at increasing capacity, reliability, and the passenger experience.

Features and onboard experience

The NextGen Acela introduces tilting technology for smoother, faster cornering, a 27% increase in seating capacity over the previous generation, and larger panoramic windows. Each seat offers power outlets and USB ports, reading lights, and ergonomic design intended to improve comfort on high-demand business and leisure routes. Connectivity upgrades include free, faster 5G-enabled Wi-Fi.

A redesigned Café Acela expands food and beverage options. Calling the launch “an evolution of travel,” said Roger Harris, Amtrak President. Passengers can expect a “premium, elevated experience,” said Tony Coscia, Amtrak Board Chair.

Deployment and service pattern

Amtrak is phasing in the new fleet while operating the classic Acela, increasing schedule options during the transition. To identify NextGen departures, Amtrak designates specific train numbers: on weekdays 2153, 2154, 2170, and 2173; on Saturdays 2250 and 2251; and on Sundays 2248, 2258, 2259, and 2271. Tickets are available through the Amtrak app, Amtrak.com, and station kiosks, with strong demand expected during launch week.

The new trainsets run the full Northeast Corridor with major stops at New York, Boston, Providence, New Haven, Stamford, Philadelphia, Baltimore, and Washington, D.C. Amtrak frames the service as a faster, cleaner alternative to short-haul flights and regional driving, aimed at moving more travelers between the region’s largest cities with fewer emissions.

Manufacturing and broader strategy

The trains are built by Alstom and assembled in Hornell, N.Y., with components sourced from more than 180 suppliers across 29 states, supporting an estimated 15,000 U.S. jobs.

“The NextGen Acela trains are the first high-speed trains built in America. The team at Alstom has brought nearly five decades of global experience in high-speed rail to the United States to deliver the fastest and most technologically advanced trains in the nation,” said Henri Poupart-Lafarge, CEO of Alstom.

The NextGen Acela forms part of a wider Amtrak transformation that includes forthcoming Amtrak Airo trains on Cascades, Northeast Regional, and East Coast routes; new long-distance locomotives; refreshed interiors across Coaches, Sleepers, Dining Cars, and Sightseer Lounges; and a planned one-seat ride between Long Island and New Jersey to eliminate transfers. Together, these initiatives are intended to expand capacity, modernize equipment, and elevate rail’s role in intercity travel along the busiest corridor in the country.
