Formula 1 returns to Miami as 275,000 fans descend on Hard Rock Stadium for the Grand Prix weekend

Formula 1 has returned to Miami for the fifth consecutive year, with more than 275,000 spectators expected at the Miami International Autodrome over the course of the Grand Prix weekend. The event, centred on the Hard Rock Stadium complex in Miami Gardens, marks the first American race of the 2026 season and F1’s return to competitive action after a five-week break caused by the cancellation of the Bahrain and Saudi Arabia rounds following the outbreak of the war in Iran.

Lando Norris claimed pole position for Saturday’s sprint race, ending Mercedes’ unbroken run at the top of qualifying sessions in 2026. The reigning world champion set a benchmark time of 1m 27.869s in sprint qualifying on Friday, going two-tenths of a second clear of championship leader Kimi Antonelli in the lead Mercedes. Oscar Piastri took third for McLaren, with Charles Leclerc fourth for Ferrari and Max Verstappen fifth for Red Bull.

“It was great, a perfect result for us,” said Lando Norris, McLaren Driver and Reigning F1 World Champion. “We’ve got a lot of new upgrades on the car, so it’s nice to feel some grip again and nice to reward the guys and the girls that have put a lot of work into this. I’ve always loved Miami, both on and off the track.”

In the sole practice session earlier on Friday, Leclerc led the timesheet with a lap of 1m 29.310s, ahead of Verstappen and Piastri. Championship leader Antonelli failed to set a final hot lap after a power unit issue struck his Mercedes late in the session. McLaren, Ferrari, and Red Bull all arrived in Miami with significant upgrade packages, with Mercedes opting to save its major update for the next round in Canada.

Weather is adding uncertainty to the weekend. AccuWeather is forecasting an 88% chance of rain and a 53% chance of thunderstorms on Sunday, raising the possibility of disruption to the main race under U.S. lightning safety legislation that can suspend outdoor events when electrical storms are in the vicinity.

Off the track, the 2026 Miami Grand Prix is offering its most immersive fan experience to date. Promoter South Florida Motorsports has redesigned the circuit campus around Miami’s iconic neighbourhoods, with themed zones modelled on districts including Wynwood and Key Biscayne. Each zone features local restaurants bringing Miami’s culinary culture directly to ticketholders, with the experience accessible to all attendees regardless of ticket tier.

“As the race enters its fifth year, the goal is to immerse visitors — many traveling from across the U.S. — in the culture and energy of Miami,” said Katharina Nowak, President of the Miami Grand Prix.

The Miami International Autodrome has been a fixture on the F1 calendar since 2022, when it became the second U.S. venue on the schedule alongside the Circuit of the Americas in Austin, Texas. The 5.41km temporary circuit wraps around the Hard Rock Stadium, a venue that has hosted six Super Bowls and two Baseball World Series. Its 19-turn layout, with three long straights and top speeds exceeding 350km/h, was chosen from 36 different design concepts during its development phase.

Miami itself remains one of F1’s most popular host cities among travelling fans, drawing visitors to South Florida’s beaches, art deco architecture, nightlife, and dining scene alongside the racing. Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport and Miami International Airport both serve the region, with race weekend hotel availability across Miami-Dade and Broward counties typically exhausted months in advance.

The sprint race takes place on Saturday, with the main Grand Prix scheduled for Sunday, 3 May. The full 2026 F1 season continues with the Canadian Grand Prix in Montreal later this month.
