Choosing to avoid peak months and travelling during quieter times could save holidaymakers as much as 91% on their next European city break, according to new research from comparethemarket.

The research has found the average cost of a hotel room in every European capital city. The average nightly cost of weekend accommodation in a European capital city is £101.

The month where the most savings can be made is January (9 cities).

The 5 cheapest cities in Europe that has the cheapest average weekend is Skopje – Macedonia with £33, Podgorica – Montenegro with £37, Minsk – Belarus with £47, Belgrade – Serbia with £53, and Bucharest – Romania and Riga – Latvia with £54.

And the 5 most expensive cities are: Monaco – Monaco with £493, Vienna – Austria with £218, Budapest – Romanaia with £197, Paris – France with £171, Helsinki – Finland with £147, and London – UK with £146.
