Istanbul Sabiha Gökçen International Airport recorded its busiest day in history on 12 July 2026, handling 166,734 passengers as travellers combined a public holiday with the weekend. The airport broke records in four separate categories on the same day, cementing its position among Europe’s largest hubs.
The surge came as passengers combined Turkey’s 15 July Democracy and National Unity Day holiday with the weekend, creating an extended travel window. The new passenger total surpassed the airport’s previous record of 165,814, set just a week earlier on 5 July 2026.
Alongside the overall passenger record, Sabiha Gökçen also posted new highs in three other categories tied to international operations. International arriving flights rose to 257 from 253, international arriving passengers climbed to 49,280 from 46,842, and total international flights increased to 505 from 499, all figures surpassing the marks set the previous week.
| Category | Previous Record (5 July) | New Historic High (12 July) |
|---|---|---|
| Total Daily Passenger Count | 165,814 | 166,734 |
| International Arriving Flights | 253 | 257 |
| International Arriving Passengers | 46,842 | 49,280 |
| International Total Flights | 499 | 505 |
Istanbul Sabiha Gökçen Airport Terminal Authority (HEAŞ) and terminal operator ISG managed the surge in coordination, with air traffic control, apron operations, terminal services, security, cleaning and passenger guidance functioning around the clock to keep operations running smoothly.
The record day follows a broader pattern of growth for the airport this year. According to a report published by ACI Europe on 10 July 2026 covering May 2026 and the first five months of the year, Sabiha Gökçen has strengthened its strategic position in international air transport amid rising passenger demand.
The data shows Sabiha Gökçen was the fastest growing airport in Europe within its category over the first five months of 2026, with passenger numbers up 7.0% compared with the same period last year. In the ACI Europe report for May 2026 alone, the airport ranked fourth among Europe’s fastest growing airports in the “major” category, which covers airports handling more than 40 million passengers annually, with growth of 2.9%.
Sabiha Gökçen also held onto its position among Europe’s top 10 airports by passenger traffic, ranking ninth both for the first five months of the year and for May specifically.
With an expanding route network and rising passenger volumes, Sabiha Gökçen continues to add to Turkey’s standing in global civil aviation and to reinforce its role as one of the region’s key connection hubs.
