Istanbul Airport broke a world air traffic record Saturday, June 10 with 1,594 take-offs and landings, thanks to the UEFA Champions League final.
Türkiye’s Directorate General of Civil Aviation said that the scheduled and charter flights also had an important role in the record.
Finalists Inter and Manchester City fans, who came by plane, caused a crowd at the airport.
While the arrival of the fans with scheduled flights continued, many non-scheduled planes departed from Italy and the UK landed at Istanbul Airport.
Private jets also carried passengers from different countries to Istanbul.
The match is played at Istanbul’s Atatürk Olympic Stadium in front of some 70 thousand spectators at the stadium and 400 million spectators watched on television.
Manchester City dominated the first half of the final but neither side was able to break the deadlock despite both teams having chances at each end. Manchester City broke the deadlock in the 68th minute when Rodrigo made a close-range finish, assisted by Bernardo Silva.
After two minutes, Inter Milan missed an opportunity to level the match after Federico Dimarco hit the crossbar with a header.
Phil Foden lost a chance to double the lead in the 78th minute.
In the 88th minute, Ederson produced a fantastic save to deny Romelu Lukaku’s header.
The match ended 1-0 and Man City became UEFA Champions League winners for the first time.
The Turkish-German captain of the team, İlkay Gündoğar, lifted the championship trophy of Manchester City.
While Manchester City won the trophy for the first time, their manager Pep Guardiola for the third time.
Istanbul Brings Good Luck to English Clubs
The Champion Clubs Cup, played in 1955, was renamed the Champions League in 1992. Istanbul hosted the cup, which has been played for 68 years, for the second time. The 2005 UEFA Champions League Final was again in Istanbul.
English and Italian clubs shared their trump cards in the final, which was played at Atatürk Olympic Stadium on May 25, 2005, as it was yesterday. Liverpool, who closed the first half behind 0-3 against the Italians A.C. Milan, won the Champions League for the fifth time by beating their opponent on penalties (3-2) after bringing the score to 3-3 in the second half.
