In a significant development post the coronavirus pandemic, China Eastern Airlines has decided to commence flights to Istanbul, following the recovery of the Turkey-China market.
According to a statement from Turkish Airlines (THY) Press Advisory, the first flight by China Eastern Airlines was conducted today, marking the initiation of services on the Shanghai-Istanbul route, which will operate with a frequency of three flights per week.
During a meeting in Shanghai, both airlines reached a consensus to expand and enhance cooperation between them. In this context, the efficiency of the existing Special Proration Agreement between the two airlines will be increased.
Strategic Expansion in the Chinese Market
Bilal Ekşi, the General Manager of THY, emphasized that Turkish Airlines has transformed into a significant company through its existing flight network and collaborations, as part of its journey from boutique to peak success. He highlighted that the Republic of China flights continue at a frequency of seven per week in Shanghai, Guanzo, and Beijing.
Ekşi stated, “In addition to our flights, we will continue to take the necessary actions to grow in the Chinese market in line with our collaborations in the region. Therefore, we will not only focus on our operations in this region but will also lead all steps to ensure each of our partners grows with us.”
Enhanced Cooperation and Trade
China Eastern Airlines CEO, Li Yangmin, expressed that the initiation of aviation services from Shanghai to Turkey will further facilitate trade and employment between the two countries. He emphasized the solid foundation of cooperation between the two airlines, stating, “With the signing of this agreement, the parties will strengthen cooperation in the future. We eagerly look forward to collaborating and developing in the areas of ground services and flight network for a common future.”
