Aldi Süd is selling the Öschberghof, its five-star hotel and golf resort in Donaueschingen on the edge of the Black Forest, after around 50 years of ownership. The buyer is the Gustav Zech Stiftung, a wealth-managing family foundation of the German Zech Group, subject to approval by Germany’s Federal Cartel Office.
The Öschberghof generated revenue of 30.7 million euros in 2024 and offers 127 rooms, with nightly rates for two people starting at 392 euros in May, with a minimum two-night stay required. The sale marks a strategic shift as the Aldi Süd group refocuses on its core retail business.
The property was comprehensively renovated around ten years ago at a cost of approximately 55 million euros. The resort includes a conference centre and an 18-hole golf course, and has regularly hosted training camps for international football clubs. West Ham United and RB Leipzig were among the clubs that stayed at the property during the summer of 2024.
“With the Zech family business, which is based in Germany, Aldi Süd has found a successor with extensive experience in the hotel industry who shares the Öschberghof’s philosophy and will continue to run the property responsibly in that spirit,” Aldi Süd told the trade publication Lebensmittelzeitung.
Operations will transfer smoothly to the new owner, according to regional newspaper Schwarzwälder Bote, with the hotel continuing without interruption. General Manager Michael Artner will remain in his post.
The Zech Group is a Bremen-based conglomerate with activities spanning construction, real estate, and hospitality. The acquisition adds one of Germany’s most prominent luxury resort properties to its portfolio.
The Öschberghof has held five-star status and built a reputation as a destination for corporate events and leisure stays in the southern Black Forest region. Its position near Donaueschingen, close to the source of the Danube river, makes it one of the more distinctive luxury addresses in Baden-Württemberg.
