Why More Travelers Are Using Furnished Apartments for Longer Periods of Time

Travel in Germany has changed significantly. With an increasing number of people traveling for a combination of both work and leisure, it is common for people to spend more time in a single location, and/or visit multiple locations during their trip.

As a result of this increased length of stay, the requirements of a traveler’s accommodations will be different based upon the type of stay.

How Extended Length of Stay Accommodations Requirements Have Changed

There is a significant difference in the requirements of a traveler on a 10 day trip versus a traveler on a 2 night trip. On a longer trip, accommodations become a part of your daily routine, whereas previously, it was merely a place to sleep. Therefore, as you travel for longer periods of time, you begin to evaluate the accommodations in a completely different manner. Access to a kitchen provides for reduced food costs and makes each day’s planning much simpler. An additional living area provides for increased comfort, especially if there is going to be remote work or travel with a family. Laundry facilities will become a necessity rather than an amenity.

It is at this point that a platform for furnished apartments in Germany could provide relevance. Furnished apartments represent a segment of the accommodation market that is centered around temporary living arrangements versus overnight tourism.

What Travelers Should Compare Beyond the Daily Rate

While a lower hotel rate may not necessarily translate into a lower overall travel cost, the nightly rate is just one component of the equation for extended length of stay travelers. Travelers must also consider the cost of meals, transportation, a workspace, laundry, transporting luggage, and the loss of convenience due to the limited space available in the room.

At first glance, a furnished apartment may appear to be more expensive than a hotel room, however, once you factor in the extended length of stay, the comparison shifts dramatically. By being able to prepare meals, having adequate storage for belongings, and eliminating the daily expense associated with dining out can create a positive impact on the overall cost of the trip. Additionally, many travelers require a reliable internet connection, a table large enough to accommodate a computer and other work related equipment, and a quieter residential setting than the hustle and bustle of a central hotel corridor can provide.

When considering bookings for extended stays, travelers should examine the minimum rental period, whether utilities are included, deposit requirements, cancellation policies, the check-in procedure, and whether the listing clearly defines the furnishings provided. These operational details have a direct impact on travel quality.

Why Location and Neighborhood Matter More on Extended Trips

In most instances, for short trips, proximity to attractions, train stations, and restaurants is the primary consideration when making a decision regarding booking accommodations. However, when taking longer trips, the quality of the neighborhood in which you are located can become more important than proximity to tourist areas.

A well-connected residential area can provide travelers with easy access to grocery stores, quiet streets, convenient public transportation options, and a more authentic experience of local daily life. Many of Germany’s major cities, including Berlin, Hamburg, Munich, Frankfurt, and Cologne, have neighborhoods that offer a better quality of life and value than those found in the tourist center of town.
