Renowned Turkish Tourism Executive Erhan Çakay Passes Away at 61

Erhan Çakay, a prominent figure in Turkey’s tourism industry, died of a heart attack on September 3, 2023, at the age of 61.

Çakay had more than 40 years of experience in top-level management positions within the sector. At the time of his death, he was serving as the General Manager of Akgün Hotel Istanbul.

Before taking on his most recent role in December 2022, Çakay held high-ranking positions at various esteemed tourism companies, such as Karnaks Travels, Eresin Hotels, and Best Western Hotels. Born in Istanbul in 1962, he was a well-respected figure in the industry.

Çakay had also been a part of the administrative bodies of key tourism organizations like Türkiye Otelciler Birliği (TÜROB – Turkey Hoteliers Association) and Türkiye Otelciler Federasyonu (TÜROFED – Turkey Hoteliers Federation). He also served roles in the International Hotel & Restaurant Association (IH&RA).

For over a decade, Çakay fulfilled the responsibilities of General Secretary of TÜROB and later served as the head of its disciplinary board.

Erhan Çakay was survived by his two children. Condolences have been extended to his family, friends, and the entire tourism community.

On behalf of TÜROB’s Board of Directors, President Müberra Eresin issued a heartfelt statement, praising Çakay for his vision and his inspirational role in the tourism sector. “His philanthropic and humble personality has earned him the love and respect of our entire community. His tireless efforts in strengthening civil society organizations in our sector and his contributions to employ qualified workers through educational roles at universities will always be remembered and appreciated,” Eresin said.

The statement ended by extending sympathies and prayers for patience to Çakay’s grieving family, the staff of Istanbul Akgün Hotel, and all those who knew him in the industry.

Erhan Çakay’s passing is being mourned as a substantial loss for Turkey’s tourism industry. His decades of contributions to the field and his leadership in multiple organizations leave behind a legacy that will long be remembered.

The funeral of the deceased will be held on Monday, September 4, 2023 (Today) from Zincirlikuyu Mosque following the Asr Prayer and will be buried in Zincirlikuyu Cemetery.
