American Airlines Named to Dow Jones Sustainability World Index

American Airlines (AA) has been named to the Dow Jones Sustainability World Index (DJSI World) for the first time, marking a notable achievement for the airline industry. American Airlines is now one of only two passenger airlines globally to be included in this prestigious Index. Additionally, the airline continues its streak on the Dow Jones Sustainability North America Index (DJSI North America), marking its third consecutive year.

The DJSI World is a collection of global sustainability leaders identified by S&P Global through a comprehensive Corporate Sustainability Assessment. This Index spotlights the top 10% of the largest 2,500 companies in the S&P Global Broad Market Index, evaluated based on long-term economic, environmental, and social criteria.

American’s CEO, Robert Isom, expressed pride in this achievement: “Inclusion on the DJSI World recognizes our work to improve the reliability of our operation, invest in our team members, and operate more sustainably. We are honored to be recognized for our progress.”

Operational Excellence and Customer Satisfaction

Leading the industry in operational reliability, American Airlines boasts the highest number of on-time departures year-to-date, outperforming its major U.S. network competitors. This operational excellence is reflected in the airline’s customer satisfaction scores. Based on approximately 3 million customer surveys, American’s Likelihood to Recommend (LTR) score, a crucial satisfaction indicator, reached an all-time high in 2022.

Investment in Team Members

In a significant move, American Airlines reached a four-year agreement with its pilots, represented by the Allied Pilots Association (APA), in 2023. This agreement promises over $9 billion in compensation and quality-of-life benefits for the airline’s 15,000 pilots. Further, the airline achieved a perfect score of 100 on the Human Rights Campaign Foundation’s 2023-2024 Corporate Equality Index, underscoring its commitment to LGBTQ+ workplace equality.

Pioneering Sustainability Initiatives

American Airlines has taken bold steps in enhancing its sustainability efforts. It is the first in the industry to set a carbon intensity target for 2035, validated by the Science Based Targets initiative. The airline has also ventured into innovative partnerships to promote sustainable aviation fuel (SAF). One such partnership is with Texas-based Infinium, focusing on producing SAF from waste carbon dioxide and renewable power.

Another groundbreaking initiative is American’s engagement with Graphyte, a carbon removal startup backed by Breakthrough Energy Ventures. Graphyte is pioneering a method of permanent carbon removal that is more energy-efficient and cost-effective compared to existing methods.
