Cancun Airport hit by widespread delays and cancellations after US winter storms

As of early Tuesday morning (Feb. 24), Cancun Airport is reporting 26 flight cancellations and 12 delays as severe winter storms in the United States continue to disrupt inbound and outbound air traffic across North America.

Most of the cancellations are tied to US routes, reflecting ongoing weather-related shutdowns and aircraft rotation issues.

Operational data shows 24 of the 26 cancellations involve flights within, into, or out of the United States, alongside 4 of the 12 reported delays. The figures indicate that conditions at US airports are the primary driver of disruption at Mexico’s busiest tourist gateway.

Weather in the United States triggers cascading cancellations

Heavy snowfall and airport closures across multiple US states have forced airlines to ground aircraft and cancel scheduled rotations, creating knock-on effects across international leisure routes. Cancun, which relies heavily on high-frequency US connections, is absorbing the operational fallout as aircraft fail to arrive for onward services.

Airlines are issuing rolling schedule adjustments as weather forecasts evolve, with some services initially delayed later canceled as recovery timelines shift. Passengers are facing longer waits in terminals while carriers work to rebook travelers and secure alternative routings.

Despite the volume of disruptions, Cancun International Airport remains open and operational, with arrivals and departures continuing on a reduced and fluid schedule. Airport authorities have not reported infrastructure issues at the facility itself, attributing the majority of disruption to external weather conditions affecting aircraft availability.

Security presence reinforced as precaution

Security measures at the airport have also been reinforced as a precaution following broader regional unrest elsewhere in Mexico linked to recent cartel-related violence. Officials emphasize that the heightened presence has not interrupted airport operations and that no security incidents have occurred at the terminal.

Aviation analysts note that when major US hubs experience winter shutdowns, high-volume tourist airports such as Cancun often see immediate downstream effects due to tightly scheduled aircraft rotations and limited spare capacity during peak travel periods.

Airlines continue advising passengers scheduled to travel through Cancun to monitor flight status closely and allow additional time as network recovery progresses. Full schedule normalization may take several days even after US weather conditions improve, as aircraft and crews are repositioned across affected routes.
