Viva Air Ceased Operations

Colombia’s Viva Air Ceased Operations

Hundreds of people were stuck at El Dorado International Airport in Bogotá, Colombia on Monday (Feb. 27) after the low-cost airline, Viva Air, closed its operations indefinitely.

Meanwhile, there were also protests by workers left without jobs due to lockdowns.

On the night of February 27, the airline announced the decision to suspend operations without prior notice to passengers.

“Viva will continue negotiations with creditors under the procedures of Decree 560 -PRE-, and will work to preserve its ability to restart operations at a future date, assuming Civil Aeronautics immediately approves the pending alliance,” said the company in a statement.

Thousands of people in different cities in Colombia and the world were trapped without being able to reach their destinations, even after the same airline received their luggage to be put on the planes.

The decision is made after seven months in which the Colombian Civil Aeronautics did not respond to the integration process between Viva Air and Avianca, currently the most important airline in Colombia, due to its difficult financial situation.
