Delta launches 7 new Europe routes with gate-to-gate celebrations

Delta has launched seven new European routes with destination-themed celebrations at airports and onboard, as the airline rolled out its largest-ever transatlantic schedule.

The new services connect the US with Madrid, Nice, Rome, Barcelona, Sardinia and Porto, while Malta is due to join the network on 7 June. The airline marked the launches with local food, music, keepsakes and special touches aimed at turning inaugural flights into memorable journeys.

Customers on the debut flights were given destination-themed items, invited to write postcards before departure and welcomed with notes commemorating the routes. Delta said it mailed the postcards from the destination so they would return home with an authentic local postmark.

The launches took place across Boston, Seattle and New York-JFK, with different events tailored to each route. In Boston, travellers heading to Madrid saw Spanish-inspired details including soccer themes, meats and cheese, and sangria-style refreshments before boarding.

Onboard that flight, passengers received traditional Spanish-style hand fans and commemorative luggage tags. A later departure to Nice featured a French Riviera-themed send-off with live music, flower market details and destination-inspired treats.

In Seattle, customers celebrating new routes to Rome and Barcelona encountered gate activations, Bell’s Cookies, pop-up Sky Club experiences and gifts linked to the inaugural flights. At New York-JFK, Delta expanded its Mediterranean network with new service to Sardinia and Porto.

Passengers travelling to Sardinia were greeted with decorations, flags, Italian music, regional sweets and a special welcome from Delta flight attendant Luca, who is from Sardinia. Travellers bound for Porto saw Portuguese-inspired decor, music and small bites before boarding.

The celebrations continued after landing. In Olbia, a water cannon salute greeted Delta’s inaugural flight from New York, marking the first nonstop service between Sardinia and the US.

Airport leaders, tourism officials, local partners and Delta teams attended the event. Roberto Ioriatti, Delta’s senior vice president of revenue management and international pricing, joined local media events marking the launch.

Local coverage described the new Sardinia route as a historic moment for the island. One headline said, “With the flight from New York, the island’s dream comes true.”

Delta said flight attendant Luca also featured prominently in local media coverage. In Porto, airline staff joined airport and community leaders for ribbon cuttings, celebratory events and media interviews as the carrier launched service to its second destination in Portugal.

Similar celebrations took place in Nice, Rome, Barcelona and Madrid as Delta expanded service across Europe. The airline said customers on the inaugural flight to Malta can expect commemorative touches when the route launches on 7 June.

The new routes form part of Delta’s largest-ever transatlantic schedule, which also includes the resumption of seasonal service to Edinburgh, Zurich, Munich, Dublin, Copenhagen, Reykjavik, Catania, Prague and Shannon from several hubs.

Delta said the additions give customers more ways to travel across Europe as demand for summer leisure travel remains strong.
