Vilnius Airport, the largest airport in Lithuania, has officially opened its new passenger departure terminal, marking a significant milestone in the country’s aviation sector.
The state-of-the-art facility is designed to double passenger capacity, enhance traveler comfort, and strengthen international connectivity, positioning Lithuania as a more accessible and efficient travel hub.
The expansion is a response to rapidly growing passenger numbers, with Lithuanian Airports (LTOU) reporting 6.6 million passengers in 2024. The new infrastructure aims to support further growth, ensuring a more efficient and seamless travel experience for both domestic and international visitors.
Covering 14,400 square meters, the two-story terminal features an array of modern amenities designed for convenience and efficiency. The first floor includes a check-in area, self-service baggage drop stations, commercial zones, and café spaces, while the second floor houses security screening, departure gates, and arrival areas for Schengen passengers. Two new boarding bridges allow direct access to aircraft, further streamlining the boarding process.
To ensure smooth passenger flow, the new terminal connects seamlessly to the existing terminal via a spacious gallery, allowing easy movement between facilities.
Technological Innovations and Infrastructure Enhancements
The new departure terminal represents a technological breakthrough for Lithuanian aviation, with dozens of advanced systems implemented to enhance security, risk management, and self-service options. This includes state-of-the-art safety protocols aimed at minimizing human error and improving overall operational efficiency.
Upgrades also extend beyond the terminal itself. Transport infrastructure around Vilnius Airport has been significantly improved, with new road surfaces, upgraded engineering networks, and passenger-friendly canopies for better vehicle and pedestrian access. A revised traffic scheme ensures the airport can accommodate higher volumes of travelers with ease.
Future Expansion Plans at Vilnius Airport
Following this milestone, Vilnius Airport is preparing for further developments. By summer 2025, work will begin on the conversion of older terminals, repurposing existing spaces to expand commercial activities and enhance passenger services. This phase is expected to be completed by the end of 2026.
Meanwhile, plans are also underway for a new arrival terminal, with construction set to begin soon. The project is expected to be completed by 2028, further transforming Lithuania’s largest airport into a modern travel hub.
With these upgrades, Vilnius Airport is reinforcing its role as a key gateway for international travelers, ensuring a world-class experience for visitors arriving in and departing from Lithuania.
