Malaysia Airlines Launches New Routes, Boosts Connectivity and Celebrates an All-Female Powered Flight

Malaysia Airlines has unveiled significant enhancements to its network and connectivity as it strives to become one of the world’s Top 10 global airlines by 2030.

The airline will commence daily flights between Kuala Lumpur and Chengdu, China, beginning 9 January 2026, bringing the airline’s network in Greater China to seven destinations. The airline currently operates flights to Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Xiamen, Hong Kong and Taipei.

This expansion reinforces its presence in one of the region’s fastest-growing markets for both business and leisure travel, further supported by the recent introduction of reciprocal visa-free entry between Malaysia and China.

China recorded an average load factor of 81% in the first half of 2025, underscoring the market’s strong demand and strategic importance for Malaysia Aviation Group (MAG), the parent company of Malaysia Airlines.

In addition to new routes, Malaysia Airlines is increasing services to Australia, New Zealand, China, India, the Maldives, and Bangladesh.

Introduction of vegetarian satay

Complementing its network expansion, Malaysia Airlines has introduced a vegetarian satay made from tender Lion’s Mane mushroom, available for Business Suite and Business Class passengers on selected sectors. Infused with the airline’s signature marinade and served with cucumber and raw onion, this plant-based bites delivers the same rich flavour as the traditional satay while offering a wholesome alternative for vegetarian travellers.

Malaysia Aviation Group also announced another significant achievement in its Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) journey with the successful operation of a domestic flight from Kuala Lumpur to Kota Kinabalu in Sabah, East Malaysia on 17 September, powered entirely by women across every touchpoint of the travel experience.

This special service brought together an all-female team: from check-in and ground handling teams at Kuala Lumpur International Airport, to engineering and security personnel, the cabin crew, and the operating pilots on the flight deck.

Commanding the Boeing 737-800 aircraft were Captain Noorsazrina Binti Zulkifli who has logged over 8,200 flight hours across domestic and international routes, and Second Officer Siti Noor Syamira Binti Baharuddin, a rising talent recently qualified on the aircraft type. They were supported by In-flight Supervisor Kulisia Anak Jipem who led a cabin crew of five women delivering Malaysia Airlines’ signature Malaysian hospitality.

Today, MAG’s female workforce account for 36% of the organisation; exceeding the goal of achieving 25% female representation in the aviation industry, a sector traditionally dominated by men. This achievement’s underscores the Group’s commitment to building an inclusive and supportive workplace where everyone can thrive.

Malaysia Airlines and Qantas have unveiled an expanded codeshare agreement which coincides with Malaysia Airlines’ largest Australian network expansion in years.

Leveraging their long-standing oneworld alliance partnership, Malaysia Airlines will place its “MH” code on 18 Qantas-operated domestic routes in Australia, enabling smooth onwards travel from major gateways to secondary cities such as Canberra, Darwin, Hobart and Launceston.

In return, Qantas will add its “QF” code to Malaysia Airlines flights between Kuala Lumpur and the Australian cities of Adelaide, Brisbane, Melbourne, Perth and Sydney, as well as services to Singapore and popular Malaysian destinations including Kota Kinabalu, Kuching, Langkawi and Penang.

In July, Malaysia Aviation Group announced it has exercised its purchase rights for 20 additional A330neo aircraft through a direct order with Airbus – reaffirming its commitment to a long-term strategy for fleet renewal and network development. With this latest acquisition, Malaysia Airlines is set to become one of the largest A330neo operators in the Asia-Pacific region.

This new order builds on MAG’s initial commitment in 2022 for 20 A330neo aircraft – comprising 10 directly purchased and 10 leased from Avolon – bringing the Group’s total A330neo commitment to 40 aircraft to date. Deliveries from this additional batch are scheduled between 2029 and 2031.

Malaysia Airlines currently has a fleet of 86 aircraft, comprising 54 narrowbody and 32 widebody aircraft. The airline has taken delivery of six Airbus A330neo widebody and 14 Boeing 737-8 narrowbody aircraft this year. Two more A330neos are expected before the end of 2025.

By 2030, the narrowbody fleet will expand to 55 aircraft, comprising 32 Boeing 737-8s and 12 Boeing 737-10s.

By the first quarter of 2026, Malaysia Airlines will operate the youngest widebody fleet into Australasia.
