New Star Alliance centre at LAX aims to cut missed flight connections

Star Alliance has opened a new Star Connection Centre at Los Angeles International Airport, aiming to reduce missed flight connections for passengers transferring between member airlines.

The facility, launched as the Alliance’s ninth centre worldwide, targets the more than 350,000 passengers who connect between Star Alliance carriers at LAX each year.

The centre is designed to support travellers with tight transfer times, using real-time monitoring to identify those at risk of missing onward flights due to delays. Dedicated teams assist passengers at arrival gates and guide them quickly to their next departure, helping streamline connections at one of North America’s busiest hubs.

The new Star Connection Centre forms part of Star Alliance’s broader effort to improve multi-airline travel across its global network. At LAX, where 16 member airlines operate more than 2,000 weekly flights to over 80 destinations across more than 20 countries, the facility plays a key role in coordinating seamless transfers.

Key functions of the Star Connection Centre include:

  • Identifying passengers at risk of missing connections due to delays
  • Providing gate-to-gate assistance for tight transfer windows
  • Coordinating support across multiple Star Alliance airlines
  • Monitoring connections using specialised real-time systems

“Every moment matters when connections are tight, and our goal is to make multi-airline journeys feel seamless,” said Ambar Franco, Vice President – Customer Experience at Star Alliance.

“At Star Connection Centres, our member airlines come together as one to ensure that, regardless of which airline passengers are flying with, they are supported from an Alliance perspective. This is what Star Alliance stands for — delivering a smooth experience across our global network. Our latest Star Connection Centre at LAX will benefit our members and customers alike.”

Behind the scenes, teams across Star Alliance member airlines work together to manage transfers efficiently. Using shared systems, agents track inbound flights and coordinate assistance, ensuring passengers are met promptly and escorted through the airport when necessary.

Star Alliance has operated Connection Centres for more than a decade, supporting both passenger and baggage transfers at key hubs worldwide. In addition to Los Angeles, passenger-focused centres are located in Brussels, Chicago, Frankfurt and Toronto, while baggage-focused centres operate in Houston, Newark, Washington Dulles and San Francisco.

At LAX, Star Alliance member airlines include Air Canada, Air China, Air New Zealand, ANA, Asiana Airlines, Austrian, Avianca, Copa Airlines, EVA Air, LOT Polish Airlines, Lufthansa, Singapore Airlines, SWISS, TAP Air Portugal, Turkish Airlines, and United. Together, they form a major global network that relies on efficient connections to maintain smooth international travel.

What this means for travellers:

  • Fewer missed connections during tight transfer times
  • Faster assistance between arrival and departure gates
  • Improved coordination across multiple airlines
  • A more seamless experience when flying multi-airline routes

The new facility highlights growing investment in improving airport connections, as airlines respond to rising demand for seamless international journeys across complex global networks.
