Phuket rolls out automated passport clearance for international departures from 13 June

Phuket International Airport will roll out automated passport channels for international departures from 13 June 2026. The automated passport control system for departing passengers would help reduce waiting times, streamline procedures and bring services in line with international standards.

The system is part of measures to improve passenger flow at immigration checkpoints following online reports of overcrowding and claims of unofficial payments to enable faster clearance.

Bangkok Post reported that officials have ordered an investigation into the allegations while accelerating service improvements.

The upgrade is intended to support rising tourist arrivals and a growing flight schedule at Phuket International Airport.  The Airports of Thailand said its Phuket office has acknowledged passenger concerns and is working with immigration authorities to manage queues more effectively.

Measures already in place include improved passenger-flow management, additional frontline staff and better coordination of flight schedules during peak hours. AoT said all immigration services operate official government procedures and there is no policy of charging additional fees for preferential immigration clearance

Eligibility on using the automated channels

Eligible passengers must hold an electronic passport, or e-Passport. Thai nationals may use all available ABC channels. Passengers must be at least 120 cm in height, and baggage higher than 120 cm is not permitted through the channel. Pregnant passengers are not permitted to use the automated channels.

Before using the system, passengers should remove face masks, glasses, and hats. Passports must be in good condition, without a cover, sleeve, or wrapping. Only one passport should be placed on the reader at a time, with no other items placed on top. Passports must have at least six months, or 180 days, of remaining validity.

Phuket Airport Immigration has also advised that part of the International Arrivals Immigration Area is undergoing improvement works until 9 July 2026 to support the installation and preparation of the ABC system.

No change to flight operations has been announced. Passengers arriving at or departing from Phuket International Airport should follow airport signage, allow sufficient time for immigration procedures, and monitor updates from Phuket Airport Immigration and Phuket International Airport.
