PATA and Phuket Hotels Association sign deal to support responsible tourism

Phuket’s hotel sector takes a step toward more sustainable growth as the Pacific Asia Travel Association (PATA) signs a new partnership agreement with the Phuket Hotels Association (PHA), a nonprofit group representing a wide range of hotels across the island in southern Thailand.

The Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) establishes a mutual affiliate membership between the two organisations and sets the framework for collaboration on responsible tourism, knowledge sharing and industry networking.

The agreement is signed by PATA CEO Noor Ahmad Hamid and Jayne MacDougall, Executive Director of PHA. It supports joint activities such as mutual promotion of events, speaker participation where appropriate, and opportunities for members of both organisations to connect through networking sessions and annual events, with registration support provided under the terms of the deal.

Building a more sustainable tourism model for Phuket

PATA positions the partnership as a way to strengthen Phuket’s long-term competitiveness while protecting the qualities that make the island one of Thailand’s most popular destinations. The hospitality sector remains a major pillar of the local economy, supporting thousands of jobs and driving visitor spending across accommodation, food, transport and leisure activities.

“As one of Thailand’s most sought-after island destinations, Phuket’s hospitality sector is a cornerstone of its economy. With this partnership, we pave the path for collaborations with the Phuket Hotels Association on their mission to promote and strengthen Phuket’s standing as a destination recognised for its quality offerings and sustainable practices,” said Noor Ahmad Hamid, CEO.

The focus on responsible tourism reflects a broader shift in global travel, where travellers increasingly seek destinations that balance growth with environmental care, community wellbeing and long-term resilience. For Phuket, an island that has experienced rapid development over decades, coordinated planning and shared standards across hotels can help reduce pressure on natural resources while improving visitor experience.

Knowledge sharing and regional collaboration

Beyond joint promotions and events, the partnership also promotes structured knowledge sharing. Under the agreement, PHA can share selected tourism research and insights with the wider PATA network on a quarterly basis through member-exclusive newsletters and relevant online channels. This gives hoteliers, destination managers and tourism professionals across Asia Pacific access to on-the-ground data and emerging trends from one of the region’s busiest leisure destinations.

MacDougall highlights the wider regional value of the collaboration. “Formalising a partnership with PATA marks an important step in advancing shared goals around responsible tourism, regional collaboration, and innovation, strengthening long-term outcomes for Phuket and the wider region,” said Jayne MacDougall, Executive Director.

The exchange of insights can support better decision-making around capacity management, sustainability initiatives, workforce development and guest expectations. It also creates a platform for Phuket-based operators to showcase successful practices that could be adopted in other destinations facing similar challenges.

For travellers, the agreement signals a growing commitment from Phuket’s hotel industry to maintain quality standards while embracing sustainable practices. As airlines restore routes and international tourism continues to rebound across Southeast Asia, partnerships like this aim to ensure that growth remains balanced, community-focused and aligned with long-term destination health.
