Scandinavian Airlines (SAS) has expanded its commercial partnership with Virgin Atlantic, giving passengers greater access to several long-haul destinations, including Dubai and the Maldives.
The enhanced codeshare agreement enables SAS customers to book Virgin Atlantic-operated flights directly through SAS channels, providing seamless connections via London Heathrow.
Under the new agreement, SAS will place its “SK” code on selected Virgin Atlantic flights to Cape Town, Johannesburg, Dubai, and Malé, with additional destinations expected to be added soon. The new codeshare flights are available for booking from October 6 for travel beginning October 8, expanding SAS’s reach to regions beyond its traditional network.
Expanded Partnership Strengthens SkyTeam Collaboration
The codeshare expansion builds on the initial partnership launched in October 2024 between SAS and Virgin Atlantic, both members of the SkyTeam alliance. The move reinforces their cooperation within the global airline network and enhances connectivity options for Scandinavian and European travelers flying to Asia, Africa, and the Middle East.
“This expanded codeshare with Virgin Atlantic strengthens SAS’ offering to both business and leisure travelers by opening up more options to popular destinations. By placing our code on Virgin Atlantic flights, we make it easier for our customers to connect seamlessly through London Heathrow and enjoy a smooth travel experience,” said Paul Verhagen, Chief Commercial Officer at SAS.
From London Heathrow, Virgin Atlantic operates key long-haul routes to destinations that complement SAS’s existing European and North American network. The cooperation enables passengers to combine SAS short-haul services from Scandinavia with Virgin Atlantic’s premium long-haul flights, reducing connection times and offering coordinated schedules for smoother transfers.
Juha Jarvinen, Chief Commercial Officer at Virgin Atlantic, said the deeper partnership highlights both airlines’ commitment to collaboration within the SkyTeam alliance. “We’re delighted to be deepening our partnership with SAS through our codeshare expansion, signalling our continued commitment to working with our fellow SkyTeam member. It means more customers can enjoy seamless connections through London Heathrow to our incredible destinations including Dubai, the Maldives and South Africa as well as enjoy the premium customer experience which Virgin Atlantic is famous for,” said Jarvinen.
The new agreement offers SAS customers one-stop access to several of Virgin Atlantic’s major long-haul destinations, eliminating the need to book separate tickets. Travelers can now fly from cities such as Copenhagen, Stockholm, and Oslo to London Heathrow on SAS, and continue their journeys to international destinations under a single booking reference.
For Virgin Atlantic, the expanded arrangement brings greater exposure in Northern Europe and improves feeder traffic from Scandinavia to its long-haul network. The cooperation is expected to benefit both carriers commercially by streamlining itineraries, enhancing connectivity through shared booking platforms, and providing reciprocal frequent-flyer opportunities through SkyTeam membership.
Industry analysts note that codeshare agreements of this nature allow mid-sized carriers such as SAS to access global destinations without operating their own long-haul aircraft, while offering customers convenience comparable to larger global airlines. For Virgin Atlantic, the agreement opens new market access in Scandinavia, a region with strong outbound travel demand to the Middle East, Indian Ocean, and southern Africa.
The expanded SAS–Virgin Atlantic codeshare exemplifies growing collaboration among SkyTeam carriers to offer more unified travel experiences across regions. As the aviation industry continues to recover from the pandemic’s impact, partnerships that enhance connectivity and simplify global travel are becoming a defining feature of the competitive airline landscape.
