Turkish Airlines Orders Additional 220 Airbus Aircraft

Türkiye’s national carrier, Turkish Airlines, will expand its fleet with an order for 220 Airbus aircraft.

This order, comprising 150 of Airbus’ A321s and a mix of 70 A350 widebody aircraft, marks a significant expansion and modernization for the airline’s fleet. This move not only strengthens Turkish Airlines’ position as a global aviation leader but also underscores its commitment to innovation, operational excellence, and a sustainable future.

The announcement of this order follows two recent acquisitions by Turkish Airlines of A350-900s in August and September 2023, bringing their total Airbus order book to an impressive 504 aircraft, with 212 already delivered. Prof. Dr. Ahmet Bolat, Chairman of the Board and the Executive Committee at Turkish Airlines, expressed that this landmark order symbolizes much more than an expansion. It represents the airline’s dedication to leading the aviation industry through advanced technology and environmentally conscious practices.

The inclusion of these state-of-the-art Airbus aircraft in Turkish Airlines’ fleet is poised to significantly enhance their operational capabilities. The A321neo, the largest aircraft in the A320neo Family, is celebrated for its unmatched range and performance. Equipped with new-generation engines and Sharklets, the A321neo boasts a 50% noise reduction and over 20% savings in fuel consumption and CO₂ emissions compared to previous generation single-aisle aircraft. These features align perfectly with Turkish Airlines’ environmental goals, as the airline continues to modernize its fleet with more efficient and eco-friendly aircraft.

The A350, the world’s most modern and efficient widebody aircraft, is a leader in the 300-410 seater category. It excels in efficiency on any sector, from short to ultra-long-haul routes. Its clean sheet design, which incorporates the latest technologies and lightweight materials, coupled with the latest generation engines, offers a 25% advantage in fuel burn, operating costs, and CO₂ emissions, along with a 50% noise reduction. The A350 Family, consisting of the A350-900 and the longer A350-1000, is renowned for providing an ultimate passenger experience, even on the longest flights, thanks to its innovative design, wide seats, high ceilings, and ambient lighting.

Christian Scherer, Airbus Chief Commercial Officer and Head of International, remarked on the significance of this order. He stated that these latest-generation aircraft, including the A350-900, A350-1000, A350F, and A321, will be flagship aircraft in their categories, driving efficiency and shaping the airline’s future. The order also highlights the cross-model value of the A350 family and reinforces the long-standing partnership between Airbus, Turkish Airlines, and Türkiye’s aviation sector.

This order for the A350F, featuring the largest main deck cargo door and a fuselage optimized for cargo operations, further signifies Turkish Airlines’ commitment to innovation. The A350F, with over 70% of its airframe made of advanced materials and efficient Rolls-Royce engines, promises at least 20% lower fuel burn and CO₂ emissions compared to its nearest competitors.

By the end of November 2023, the A350 Family had secured 1,072 orders from 57 leading customers globally, making it a popular choice among airlines. With Turkish Airlines’ latest endorsement, the A350F order book stands at 50 orders from nine customers, solidifying its position in the market.

This significant order by Turkish Airlines not only reinforces its leading role in global aviation but also contributes to Türkiye’s prominence as an aviation hub. As the airline continues to modernize its fleet with these advanced, efficient, and environmentally friendly Airbus aircraft, it sets a new standard in the industry, demonstrating a bold vision for the future of air travel.
