The Flughafen Wien Group (Vienna Airport, Malta Airport and Kosice Airport) reported a stable development in the month of May 2026, with passenger traffic rising slightly by 0.7% from the prior-year month to 3,912,644 passengers.
As expected, the number of passengers handled by Vienna Airport fell by 5.4% to 2,743,817 travellers. This decline can be attributed to the reduction in low-cost carrier capacities as well as the reduced flight offering related to the ongoing crisis in the Middle East. In contrast, passenger volume at Malta Airport increased by 16.5% to 1,080,966 travellers in May 2026, and Kosice Airport reported strong growth of 57.2% to 87,861 passengers. In the period January to May 2026, passenger traffic in the entire Flughafen Wien Group rose by 2.4% to 15,936,081 travellers.

In May 2026, the Flughafen Wien Group (Vienna Airport, Malta Airport and Kosice Airport) handled a total of 3,912,644 passengers, comprising an increase of 0.7% compared to May 2025. Passenger volume at Malta Airport rose to 1,080,966 travellers in May 2026 (+16.5%) and Kosice Airport showed a rise of 57.2% to 87,861 passengers.

Total passenger volume at Vienna Airport equalled 2,743,817 travellers (-5.4%) in the month of May 2026.
Traffic development in detail
The number of local passengers at Vienna Airport fell by 4.3% from the prior-year month to 2,174,047 travellers in May 2026, and transfer passenger traffic fell by 4.7% to 548,938. The number of flight movements in May 2026 declined by 6,5% to a total of 20,414 take-offs and landings. The seat load factor was up 1.4 percentage points compared to May 2025 to 80.5%. Cargo volume totalled 26,761 tonnes, comprising a YOY decline of 4.2%.
In May 2026, passenger traffic from Vienna Airport to Western Europe equalled 1,000,075 travellers (+0.8% YOY). The number of passengers flying to Eastern Europe in May 2026 amounted to 209,782 travellers (-16.4%). Vienna Airport reported a total of 41,374 passengers flying to North America (+1.1%) and 26,467 travellers to Africa (+7.5%). Due to the ongoing crisis situation and the related impacts on flight traffic, the Middle East region showed a 59.7% decline in passenger traffic to a total of 27,220 travellers. In contrast, the number of passengers flying to destinations in the Far East climbed 15.6% to 55,780 travellers.

The total number of passengers handled by Vienna Airport in the period January-May 2026 fell by 2.5% from the previous year to the accumulated figure of 11,435,310 travellers. Cargo volume equalled 127,219 tonnes (-0.8%). Passenger volume in the entire Flughafen Wien Group (Vienna Airport, Malta Airport and Kosice Airport) climbed by 2.4% during this period to 15,936,081 travellers.
