Holland America Line is bringing an exciting new addition to its Alaska cruise experience—Eland the Moose.
This adorable plush companion isn’t just a cute souvenir; it also supports a meaningful cause. As the latest mascot to join Holland America’s lineup, Eland is set to raise awareness for Alaska’s wildlife while giving guests a unique way to take home a piece of The Great Land.
Eland the Moose is available for purchase on all Holland America ships sailing to Alaska starting in spring 2025, as well as at the Holland America Denali Lodge. More than just a keepsake, Eland plays a role in the cruise line’s continued commitment to conservation. For every plush moose sold during the 2025 Alaska season, Holland America Line will donate $2 to the Alaska Wildlife Conservation Center (AWCC). This partnership, which began in 2024, helps care for orphaned and injured animals while educating visitors about the importance of protecting natural habitats.
The inspiration behind Eland comes from Holland America’s European heritage—his name translates to “moose” in Dutch. But his story goes even deeper. According to the cruise line, Eland was orphaned as a calf and taken in by AWCC, where he was raised and became an ambassador for wildlife conservation. Now, he serves as a symbol of Holland America’s dedication to responsible tourism and preserving Alaska’s ecosystem.
Guests sailing on an Alaska itinerary will also have the chance to engage with wildlife firsthand. Holland America offers shore excursions that allow visitors to experience the AWCC facility, where they can get up close with resident moose and even feed them.
Guided by AWCC staff, these encounters provide insights into moose behavior, their natural environment, and ongoing conservation efforts. Two specific shore excursions include a stop at AWCC: the Portage Glacier Cruise & Alaska Wildlife Conservation Center for guests in Anchorage and the Turnagain Arm, Wildlife Conservation Center & Alyeska Tram with Airport Transfer for those disembarking in Whittier.
In addition to moose, Alaska cruises offer some of the most diverse wildlife viewing opportunities at sea. Passengers can spot whales, bears, eagles, otters, seals, and more, with expert naturalists on board to help guests identify these magnificent creatures. Wildlife sightings are even announced throughout the day to enhance the experience. Holland America provides a Wildlife Spotting Guide with maps detailing the best locations to observe Alaska’s native species.
Holland America Line continues to set itself apart as a leader in Alaska travel. With six ships dedicated to the region in 2025, the cruise line offers everything from classic seven-day itineraries to extended 14-day voyages and an immersive 28-day Arctic Circle journey that stops at 12 Alaska ports. It remains the only major cruise line to venture deep into the Yukon as part of its exclusive Cruisetours, which combine a cruise with land-based exploration, including Denali National Park.
For travelers looking for a meaningful souvenir that gives back, Eland the Moose is a perfect choice. Whether purchased on board or at the Denali Lodge, each plush moose helps support Alaska’s wildlife and conservation efforts, making it a keepsake with a purpose. As Holland America expands its commitment to preserving The Great Land, Eland stands as a reminder that every small action can make a difference for Alaska’s remarkable wildlife.
