Every cruise season carries a sense of anticipation, but some years begin with a momentum that feels unmistakably electric. Such was the case at Port Everglades, where a flurry of celebrations signaled that South Florida’s cruise landscape is entering a vibrant new chapter.
The excitement centered around a rare two-week stretch in which three major cruise ships were formally named, honored and sent off on their maiden voyages from one of the world’s busiest homeports. According to Broward County’s port authority, this rapid succession underscored Port Everglades’ emergence as a preferred stage for milestone moments across multiple cruise brands.
The port’s celebratory run began with Princess Cruises’ Star Princess, which held its naming on November 6 followed by a Plaques-and-Keys ceremony the next day. Disney Cruise Line’s Disney Destiny continued the momentum with its christening on November 10 and a Plaques-and-Keys presentation on November 19. Celebrity Cruises then rounded out the trio when Celebrity Xcel was named on November 16 after its own port ceremony on November 9.
Each event carried its own theatrical flair, from celebrity godparents to meticulous drone shows that illuminated the sky above the port’s channel. Guests, crew and onlookers gathered along the waterfront to watch tugboats send off the ships with traditional water sprays, creating momentary festivals of sound and color as the vessels eased out to sea.
A Port Positioned for Growth
Port Everglades leaders viewed the celebrations as more than a series of ceremonial spectacles. Joseph Morris, the port’s CEO and Port Director, said the milestones reflect the trust cruise lines continue to place in the destination. “These milestones highlight the confidence that the world’s leading cruise brands continue to place in Port Everglades,” added Joseph Morris. He emphasized that welcoming three next-generation ships within days demonstrated the port’s “operational agility” and the strength of its industry partnerships.
Each of the three vessels also represents a step forward in sustainable cruising, a priority shared by the port and its partners. All operate on alternative fuels such as Liquified Natural Gas and green methanol, which offer reduced greenhouse gas emissions. The port notes that it is now working with cruise lines to support future fuels and shore power systems that will allow ships to operate on electricity while docked. Broward County is in contract negotiations to design shore power electrification across its eight cruise terminals, a development that could reshape the way vessels power down during turnaround operations.
A Look Toward the Season Ahead
The launch of the 2026 cruise season in October further sets the stage for Port Everglades’ expanding role. This season, the port will host nine cruise lines, 40 cruise ships and one fast ferry. The lineup includes Royal Caribbean’s Allure of the Seas and Jewel of the Seas, Celebrity’s Celebrity Reflection, Disney’s Disney Destiny, Princess Cruises’ Regal Princess and Baleària Caribbean’s Jaume II fast ferry.
Even more growth lies on the horizon. Royal Caribbean’s third Icon-class vessel, Legend of the Seas, will homeport at Port Everglades beginning in November 2026. With capacity for more than 5,600 guests, it will become the largest vessel ever to sail from the port, adding another high-profile element to an already competitive market.
The combination of new ships, sustainable technologies and a strong cruise lineup reflects a port in transformation. For travelers, this means more choice, more itineraries and more opportunities to embark from a hub that continues to refine its passenger experience. For the industry, it suggests that Port Everglades’ influence is likely to grow as cruise lines position their newest vessels where infrastructure, demand and innovation align.
As the port looks ahead to the coming years, its leaders describe the recent celebrations not as an anomaly but as an early sign of a robust season. For cruise enthusiasts planning their next sailing—or simply following the latest developments in one of travel’s most dynamic sectors—Port Everglades is offering a clear message: the energy here is rising, and the waves of change have only just begun.
