Star Princess Completes Successful Sea Trials Ahead of October Debut

Star Princess completes successful sea trials ahead of October debut, marking a key milestone for Princess Cruises’ second Sphere-Class ship. Built by Fincantieri in Monfalcone, Italy, the LNG-powered vessel has now wrapped up a series of critical performance tests in the Adriatic Sea and is on track to welcome its first guests on October 4, 2025, for scenic Mediterranean voyages departing from Barcelona.

A Major Step Toward Launch

From August 9–12, Star Princess left the Fincantieri shipyard to undergo comprehensive trials, including assessments of steering, propulsion, and navigation systems. The tests confirmed the ship’s advanced maneuverability, thanks to twin Azipod propulsion units capable of 360-degree thrust in any direction and four large controllable pitch bow thrusters for precise lateral movement.

The trials were overseen by Captain Gennaro Arma, a 27-year veteran of Princess Cruises who now leads a team of 1,600 crew members preparing the ship for its debut. “We confidently led Star Princess through sea trials,” said Captain Arma. “I’m extremely impressed with the ship’s navigation capabilities and maneuverability, and my incredible teammates and I can’t wait to welcome guests aboard for unforgettable adventures this fall.”

Sustainable Power and Advanced Design

As the second Princess Cruises ship powered by liquefied natural gas (LNG), Star Princess underscores the line’s commitment to reducing emissions while delivering next-generation cruising experiences. LNG technology offers a cleaner-burning alternative to traditional marine fuels, helping reduce greenhouse gas output.

Weighing in at 177,800 tons and accommodating 4,300 guests, Star Princess is the sister ship to the award-winning Sun Princess. She introduces an elevated selection of amenities, with 30 distinct dining and bar venues, expansive entertainment spaces, and luxurious accommodations that include the exclusive Sanctuary Collection suites, mini-suites, and balcony rooms.

Standout Onboard Experiences

Guests will find over 1,500 balcony staterooms for private ocean views and several signature venues designed to define the Sphere-Class experience:

  • The Dome: A next-generation relaxation and entertainment space featuring panoramic vistas.
  • The Arena: The most technologically advanced theater in the Princess fleet, hosting world-class performances.
  • The Piazza: The architectural heart of the ship with dramatic curves, floor-to-ceiling windows, and sweeping ocean views.
  • Spellbound by Magic Castle®: A unique speakeasy-style venue created in collaboration with Hollywood’s famed Magic Castle™.

These spaces, combined with Princess’ renowned MedallionClass service, are designed to create a blend of large-ship amenities with the personalized feel of a smaller, yacht-style cruise.

Inaugural Voyages Around the World

Following her debut in the Mediterranean, Star Princess will offer an inaugural season sailing to a variety of destinations, including the Caribbean, Panama Canal, and Alaska. Guests can expect itineraries that pair the new ship’s state-of-the-art features with some of the world’s most scenic cruising regions.

Bookings are already open, allowing travelers to secure early access to voyages that will likely be in high demand given the excitement surrounding the launch.

Part of the Princess Cruises Legacy

Princess Cruises has built a reputation as “The Love Boat,” blending innovative ship design with a commitment to meaningful guest experiences. Star Princess continues that tradition while representing a leap forward in sustainability and onboard technology.

As part of Carnival Corporation & plc, Princess Cruises operates a global fleet that visits destinations across the Caribbean, Alaska, Europe, Asia, Australia, and beyond. The introduction of the Sphere-Class platform with Sun Princess in early 2024, and now Star Princess in late 2025, reflects the company’s vision for the future of large-ship cruising.

Countdown to October 4

With the sea trials now complete, Star Princess enters the final outfitting phase, where her interiors, amenities, and guest services are prepared for operation. From the Sanctuary Collection suites to the immersive dining and entertainment venues, every detail is being refined to ensure a seamless inaugural experience.

Travelers eager to be among the first on board can book through Princess Cruises’ website or their preferred travel advisor. With her combination of LNG efficiency, cutting-edge design, and Princess’ signature service, Star Princess is poised to make a memorable debut that will carry the Sphere-Class legacy forward for years to come.
