German tourists fined in Venice for making coffee near Rialto Bridge

Two German backpackers were fined a total of €950 for preparing coffee on a travel cooker near the Rialto Bridge.

About 30 million tourists visit the city every year. As the city battles against over-tourism, the city punishes ill-mannered visitors with fines. Visitors caught snacking, sunbathing or taking a dip in Venice’s canals risk being kicked out of the city and banned from returning, under the latest rules. There are also be fines of up to €500 for anyone who “dirties public places in any way”.

Most recently, the tourists from Berlin were spotted making coffee at the foot of the Rialto Bridge – the oldest of the four bridges on the Grand Canal. They were reported to police by a passer-by. The backpackers were fined a total of €950 and also asked to leave the city.
