Water Shortage Forces Capri Island to Close Doors to Tourists

Capri Island, known for its steep cliffs and stunning scenery in the Gulf of Naples, is facing a significant crisis. A major breakdown in the island’s drinking water system has led to an emergency situation.

In response to the crisis, Capri’s Mayor Paolo Falco issued an urgent directive. The directive halts the entry of tourists to the island. Only residents of Capri are allowed entry, while recent arrivals are being asked to return to the mainland. Ferries carrying tourists to Capri have been instructed to return to their departure ports.

Mayor Falco highlighted the challenges faced during the tourism season. He explained that without essential services, it is impossible to guarantee basic needs. “The health and hygiene situation on the island is about to explode. We have taken our precautions. We have activated the crisis team and issued a restrictive directive. We are working with the Mayor of Anacapri, the Prefecture, and all relevant institutions,” Falco said.

The company responsible for the island’s water supply, Gori, is working to fix the issue and restore the water network. It is reported that a large part of the island still has water. Most of those without water are using their water tanks.

Capri Island, a top tourist destination in Italy, spans 10.4 square kilometers and has a population of about 14,000. During the summer tourism season, thousands of tourists visit the island daily. Capri is also a popular spot for yacht tourism in the country.
