Ouigo will expand its high-speed rail services across Spain starting December 14, increasing total frequencies by 14% to meet growing passenger demand. The French low-cost train operator will add new daily trips on its main routes linking Madrid with Barcelona, Seville, Málaga, and Murcia, consolidating its position as a key competitor on Spain’s high-speed network.
The expansion includes more services on four major corridors and nearly 740,000 additional annual seats. The operator, which began running in Spain in May 2021, said the move reflects sustained demand for affordable high-speed travel and strengthens its long-term strategy in the Iberian market. Tickets for the new services go on sale October 9, covering travel through August 2, 2026.
More Trains on Key Routes
On the busy Madrid–Barcelona route, Ouigo will now operate 12 daily trips — six in each direction — with four trains stopping in Zaragoza. The adjustment represents a 20% increase in frequencies and adds about 370,000 seats per year. The Madrid–Murcia corridor will also see growth with a third daily round-trip service, expanding total capacity by around 5%.
In southern Spain, the company will expand its Madrid–Málaga route to three daily services in each direction, also adding approximately 370,000 seats per year. The Madrid–Seville corridor will see the greatest proportional increase, with Ouigo boosting service from three to four daily departures each way. All Seville trains will include a stop in Córdoba to enhance regional connectivity with the capital.
The new timetable specifies that trains from Seville’s Santa Justa station will depart at 3:07 p.m., while return trips from Madrid’s Puerta de Atocha station will leave at 12:30 p.m. The operator said the changes will improve scheduling flexibility for travelers and better align service times with business and leisure demand patterns.
Strengthening Spain’s Competitive High-Speed Market
With the additional services, Ouigo reinforces its role as a major player in Spain’s liberalized high-speed rail sector, competing directly with Renfe’s AVE and Avlo, as well as Italy’s Iryo. The expansion underscores growing competition in the Spanish market, where multiple operators are vying for passengers seeking faster and more affordable alternatives to air travel.
Since entering Spain in 2021, Ouigo has positioned itself as a low-cost operator offering fares from €9. Its colorful double-decker trains, operated by SNCF Voyageurs, currently connect Madrid with Barcelona, Valencia, Alicante, Zaragoza, Tarragona, and Albacete, among other destinations. The new routes and frequencies represent the next phase in Ouigo’s expansion plan aimed at increasing coverage and operational efficiency on Spain’s key corridors.
Spain remains one of Europe’s most dynamic rail markets, following the government’s decision to open its high-speed network to competition in 2021. Liberalization has led to price reductions, higher frequencies, and record passenger numbers on routes such as Madrid–Barcelona, one of Europe’s busiest rail corridors. The growing presence of operators like Ouigo and Iryo has accelerated demand recovery since the pandemic, offering travelers more choice and flexibility.
Ouigo’s expansion also comes as Spain continues to promote sustainable transport alternatives to domestic flights. High-speed rail is central to the government’s strategy for reducing carbon emissions and congestion on major routes. The increased service capacity will support greater modal shift from air to rail, especially between Madrid and major cities in Andalusia and Catalonia.
The new December schedule will be integrated into Ouigo’s existing operations, which rely on five daily-travel models designed to maximize train utilization and network efficiency. The company’s goal is to expand passenger volumes while maintaining competitive pricing and a strong environmental profile.
With the latest additions, Ouigo will serve a total of 122 daily connections across its Spanish routes. The move strengthens its brand visibility and confirms its commitment to the Spanish market as one of the fastest-growing high-speed rail systems in Europe. As the company looks ahead to 2026, it plans to further expand capacity and explore new regional links, continuing its mission to make high-speed travel accessible to more passengers across Spain.
